REACTION KINETICS – 1
1. A series of experiments was carried out to investigate the kinetics of the
reaction between hydrogen and nitrogen monoxide at 500 oC. The balanced
equation for this reaction is shown below:
2 H2 (g) + 2 NO (g) → 2 H2O (g) + N2 (g)

The initial rates of reaction obtained by varying the initial concentrations of

nitrogen monoxide and hydrogen in the reaction mixture are shown in the
table:

Experiment [NO]/ mol dm-3 [H2]/mol dm-3 Rate / mol dm-3s-1

1 0.01 0.01 3 x 10-4

2 0.01 0.03 9 x 10-4

3 0.05 0.03 2.25 x 10-2

a) What do you understand by initial rate of reaction ?

the change in the amount of reactants/products per unit time ()
at time = 0 ()

b) Deduce the order of the reaction with respect to nitrogen monoxide. Explain
your reasoning.
2 ()
Expt 2 & 3 / 5-fold increase in [NO] causes 25-fold increase in rate ()

c) Deduce the order of the reaction with respect to hydrogen. Explain your
reasoning.
1 ()
Expt 1 & 2 / 3-fold increase in [H2] causes 3-fold increase in rate ()

d) Deduce the rate equation for the reaction.

rate = k [NO]2 [H2] ()

e) Calculate the value of the rate constant of the reaction and state its units.
k = rate = 3 x 10-4 () = 300 () mol-2 dm6 s-1 ()
[NO]2 [H2] 0.012 x 0.01

f) Calculate the rate of reaction if the initial concentration of nitrogen monoxide

is 0.02 mol dm-3 and that of hydrogen is 0.05 mol dm-3.
Rate = 300 x 0.022 x 0.05 () = 6 x 10-3 mol dm-3 s-1 ()

2. The hydrolysis reaction of the ester, CH 3COOCH3, by sodium hydroxide solution
was studied in a series of experiments carried out at constant temperature.
The initial concentrations of the reagents and the initial rates of reaction which
were measured are shown in the table.
Experime [OH -]/mol dm-3 [ester]/mol dm- Rate/mol dm-3s-1

1 0.1 0.2 3.0 x 10-3
2 0.5 0.2 1.5 x 10-2
3 0.1 0.3 4.5 x 10-3
a) Explain what is meant by the order of a reaction.
the sum of the powers of the concentration terms ()
in the experimentally determined rate equation ()
b) Deduce the order of the reaction with respect to hydroxide ions. Explain your
reasoning.
1 ()
Expt 1 & 2 / 5-fold increase in [OH -] causes 5-fold increase in rate ()
c) Deduce the order of the reaction with respect to methyl ethanoate. Explain
your reasoning.
1 ()
Expt 1 & 3 / 1.5-fold increase in [OH -] causes 1.5-fold increase in rate ()

d) State the rate equation for the reaction.

rate = k [ester] [OH -] 1 ()

e) Deduce the value of the rate constant and state its units.
k = rate = 3 x 10-3 () = 0.15 () mol-1 dm3 s-1 ()
[ester] [OH -] 0.1 x 0.2

f) Explain why this reaction only occurs slowly at room temperature but the
reaction rate is much higher if the reaction mixture is heated.
The reaction has a high activation energy ()
At higher temperature more molecules have energy greater than Ea ()
