Lab Activity Physical and Chemical Change
Lab Activity Physical and Chemical Change
Discussion
In a physical change, one or more physical properties of a substance are altered. Examples of such
physical properties include size, shape, color, and physical phase. No new substance or substances are
formed as a result of physical change.
A chemical change results in the formation of one or more “new” substances. These new substances
differ in chemical properties and composition from the original substance.
This experiment will help you understand the difference between physical and chemical change and to
recognize each type of change when it occurs.
Materials Needed:
2 Petri Dishes Cutter or Scissors Match Sticks
3 Beakers 2 pcs Candle Stirring Rod
Bunsen Burner Providone Iodine
Tripod Bleach
Wire Gauze Old News Paper
Procedure:
Part 2: Paper
A.
1. Tear a piece of newspaper (2 inches X 2 inches) into 4 small pieces.
Q. 1: Is this a physical change or a chemical change? ________________
B.
1. Place a pieces of the small papers on a petri dish.
2. Ignite the paper with a match and allow to burn.
3. Record your observations on your notebook.
4. Now take another piece of paper (2 inches X 2 inches) and crumple it up lightly.
5. Place it on the petri dish and light it with a match.
Q. 1: When the paper burned, was it physical change or chemical change?
