Laboratory Activity 1. Physical and Chemical Change

Discussion
In a physical change, one or more physical properties of a substance are altered. Examples of such
physical properties include size, shape, color, and physical phase. No new substance or substances are
formed as a result of physical change.
A chemical change results in the formation of one or more “new” substances. These new substances
differ in chemical properties and composition from the original substance.
This experiment will help you understand the difference between physical and chemical change and to
recognize each type of change when it occurs.

Objective: To recognize and distinguish between chemical and physical changes.

Materials Needed:
 2 Petri Dishes  Cutter or Scissors  Match Sticks
 3 Beakers  2 pcs Candle  Stirring Rod
 Bunsen Burner  Providone Iodine
 Tripod  Bleach
 Wire Gauze  Old News Paper

Procedure:

Part 1: Candle and Wax

A.
1. Scrape or cut up the canlde wax and place in a beaker, not including the wick.
2. Heat the beaker gently over a burner flame until the wax melts completely. Observe.
3. Allow the wax to cool .
Q.1: What are your observations of melting candle wax?
Color of wax as solid : ______________
Color of melted wax : ______________
Q. 2: Did a new substance form during this activity? ________
Q. 3: Was this a physical change or a chemical change? ________________
B.
1. Light a candle, drip a drop of wax and use it to secure the candle to a petri dish.
2. Allow the candle to burn for 2 minutes. Observe.
Q.1: What are your observations?
Describe the color of the flame. ____________
Describe the actual flame as the candle burns. _______________________
Q. 2: Does the wax drip or does it disappear? ___________________
Q. 3: Was the burning of the candle a physical or a chemical change? ______________
C.
1. Now light a match and hold it to the side.
2. Have your partner blow out the candle.
3. Try to relight the candle by placing the lit match in the white smoke of the candle.
Q. 1: Can you get your candle to relight? __________
Q. 2: What do you observe? __________________________

Part 2: Paper
A.
1. Tear a piece of newspaper (2 inches X 2 inches) into 4 small pieces.
Q. 1: Is this a physical change or a chemical change? ________________
B.
1. Place a pieces of the small papers on a petri dish.
2. Ignite the paper with a match and allow to burn.
3. Record your observations on your notebook.
4. Now take another piece of paper (2 inches X 2 inches) and crumple it up lightly.
5. Place it on the petri dish and light it with a match.
Q. 1: When the paper burned, was it physical change or chemical change?
__________________
Q. 2: Which burned better? The piece of flat paper or the crumpled paper?

Why do you think this happens? __________________________________________

Part 3: Providone Iodine and Bleach

1. Place 30ml of water in a small beaker.
2. Ask the teacher to put 3 drops of Providone Iodine with the water. Stir. Observe.
Q. 1: What is the color of the solution? _______________
3. Use a dropper to add 1 ml of Bleach to the Iodine-water mixture. Stir. Observe.
Q. 2: What happened to the mixture? _______________________________
Q. 3: Was this a physical change or a chemical change? ________________
