Example 1:

Use A572 Gr. 60 steel and LRFD specifications to select the lightest
W-shape for the simply supported beam, shown below, considering
all limit states of beams’ strength. The beam is continuously
supported in the lateral direction and subjected to the service loads
given in the accompanying figure. The dead load does not include the
self-weight of the beam. The allowable deflection is 2 inch ≈ 5cm.
Solution
Step 1. Calculate the factored design loads (without beam’s self-weight).
