METHODOLOGY

1. Peculiarities of teaching via MeritHub

o The same human contact but the participation is not the same => using the chat window
instead of the board
o Difficulties working with books Merithub
— There are some approved books we work with. The teacher may take other books but
needs to inform the administration.
— Peculiarities of NEFs (fast pace, easy level etc.)
— Additional grammar books and other resources
— Another method which we are implementing: create word files copying parts from PDF in
order not to open many books during the lesson. You don’t need to give numbers of pages
in different books – you just work in one file (show examples). At the moment we are
creating a database of such files. It’s up to the teacher now whether to create their own
working files or to use a book. But the teacher’s task is to make the process as easy as
possible, so they still need to create files with additional material and wordlists.
o Creating wordlists
— Wordlists organize students’ knowledge and save their time
— Structure the wordlist according to the parts of speech
— Discuss a few words from the wordlist
— A wordlist helps to create exercises based on words the student has learned
o Some things can’t be done online (e.g. listening, checking writing tasks etc.)
o Individual approach to every student (because we provide individual learning)
o Planning your lessons

2. Purposes of teaching and learning English

o We learn to speak
o We don’t make philologists out of simple people
o We give grammar in a clear and simple form
o We focus on things which are particularly important to the student

3. Psychology of communication
o Smiling
o Being polite, but persistent
o Being not only a teacher, but also a person who can understand their students’ feelings
o Trying to make lessons involving (focus on student’s personal experiences)
o Having an effective way of correcting mistakes in writing and speaking
o Making activities interesting (e.g. we’re going to hunt for mistakes)
o Using dictionaries at the lessons
o Grading your language according to student’s level

4. Introductory lesson
o The beginning is always in English
2

o Small talk (speaking / non-speaking student) => Assessing the student’s level of knowledge
o Getting to know the purposes of learning English
o Explaining principles of studying with us (speaking is our main goal, etc.)
o Explaining importance of homework
o Answering the student’s questions
o Discussing the timetable and arranging time for the first lesson
o Sending a test (if needed)

5. Teaching skills
o Reading
— Use texts to the full
— Students who need to learn to read do reading in class
— Those, who don’t, do reading at home (wordlists are discussed beforehand)
o Writing (done offline)
o Listening
— Done offline
— Checked in form of discussing the content or answering questions
— Using tape scripts to create additional exercises (gap fill)
o Speaking (as much as possible, students can’t do it alone)
o Pronunciation (just basic sounds)
o Grammar
— Explain grammar in English
— Avoid linguistic terms
— Steps to explain Grammar:
1. Explanation in a simple language
2. Practice using exercises (control your student)
3. Independent practice (student uses new grammar in their speech)

6. The lesson structure and the ESA (Engage – Study – Activate)

o ESA for every activity in the class:
— How to motivate the students: focus on personal experience (engagement and
involvement in every activity
— Smooth and logical transition from one task to another one
— A common character, e.g. Jim (where possible)
o Warm-ups ~ 5 min
o Checking homework ~ 10-15 min
o Studying => Grammar or Vocabulary (or both)
o Follow-ups => Communication
o Conclusions and Giving Homework ~ 5 min

7. Preparing and checking homework

3

o Additional translation exercises

o Making comments in homework files to be looked at before the lesson
o Not analyzing every single mistake
o Listening to be given as homework

8. Students’ questions
o How long am I going to study English?
o How to correct mistakes during the lessons
o Teacher’s work experience
o Rescheduling and canceling lessons
o Payment can be discussed only with an administrator
