OBSERVING THE

GERMINATION
AND GROWTH OF
LENTIL SEEDS
BIOLOGY AND GEOLOGY
1 ESO
Teacher: Conchi Sicilia

Name of Student:
OBJECTIVE

In this project we are going to observe the growth

of a plant.
We chose lentils due to their rapid growth and
their simple needs for germination.
Make your notes clear and legible.
For each day that the project is turned in late the
student will be penalized one point.
On the due date you must bring your plants to
class. If you do not, your grade will be significantly
reduced.

MATERIALS
Plastic cup or transparent glass.
Cotton.
Two lentil seeds.
Water.
Ruler.
Permanent marker.

PROCEDURE
Place the cotton in the cup/glass.
Situate the seeds in the cotton so that you can see
them through the glass or plastic.
Moisten the cotton without allowing any standing
water in the cup.
Mark the cup with your name and the date.

1
INFORMATION: BEFORE YOU START

You must answer the following questions:

What is the scientific name for lentils?

What is its full classification?

Give a detailed hypothesis of what is going to happen.

Why are we planting two seeds instead of just one?

OBSERVATIONS

During the next 15 days you must observe your

plants daily (label them plant 1 and plant 2) and carefully
annotate everything that happens in the table.
Measure the length of the stems daily, as well as
the roots of each plant (in mm).
It is important that the cotton is always damp and
the plant is in a well-lit, open place.

CONCLUSIONS

Describe your experience with the project, the

problems you had, what you learned…

Was your original hypothesis correct? Why or why

not?

Make a graph in which you show how the stems and

roots of your two plants grew. To do this, use a
different color for Plant 1 and Plant 2. Mark the growth
in millimeters on the Y axis and the days on the X axis.
