Sucker Rode pumping (SRP)

Sucker rod pumping is also referred to as ‘‘beam pumping.’’

It provides mechanical energy to lift oil from bottom hole to surface.
Advantages
1- It can pump a well down to very low pressure to maximize oil
production rate.
2-It is efficient, simple, and easy for field people to operate..

3-It is applicable to slim holes, multiple completions, and high-temperature and

‫رﻓﯾﻌﺔ‬
viscous oils.

4- The system is also easy to change to other wells with minimum cost
The major disadvantages of sucker rode pumping include:
excessive friction in crooked/ deviated holes, solid-sensitive problems,
‫زاﺋد‬ ‫ﻣﻠﺗوﯾﺔ‬ ‫اﻧﺣرﻓت‬
low efficiency in gassy wells, limited depth due to rod capacity, and
bulky in offshore operations.

Pumping System
a sucker rod pumping system consists of
1- pumping unit (associated prime mover) at surface
The function of the pumping unit is to convert the rotary motion of
‫ﺗﺣوﯾل‬
the prime mover to the vertical reciprocation motion of the
polished rod.
‫ﻣﺻﻘول‬
prime mover (either an electric or an internal combustion engine)
localize on the surface of the pump unit
2- plunger pump submerged in the production liquid in the well
‫ﻣﻛﺑس‬
responsible to elevate the fluid from reservoir up to the surface

3- sucker rod
The rod string is the link between the pump unit localized on
the surface and the bottom hole pump.

4- The horse’s head and the hanger cable arrangement

The horse’s head is and the hanger cable arrangement used to ensure
that the upward pull the sucker rod string is vertical at all times.

5- The polished rod and stuffing box combine

To maintain a good liquid seal at the surface and, thus, force fluid
to flow into the ‘‘T’’ connection just below the stuffing box.

6- Counter weight
Counter weight used for balance
7- Walking beam
It provides mechanical move to up and down
There are two other major types of pumping units. These are the Lufkin
Mark II and the Air-Balanced Units. The pitman arm and horse’s head
are in the same side of the walking beam in these two types of units.
Instead of using counter-weights in Lufkin Mark II type units, air
‫ﺑدﻻ‬
cylinders are used in the air balanced units to balance.

Stimulation and Remedial Operations
oil recovery can be defined in three phases:

1- Primary oilrecovery(POR) is recovery by natural drive energy

initially available in the reservoir.

2- Secondary oil recovery(SOR) is recovery by injection of external

fluids, such as water and/or gas, mainly for the purpose of pressure
maintenance and volumetric sweep efficiency.

3- Enhanced oil recovery(EOR) OR Improved oil recovery (IOR)

oil recovery by injection of gases or chemicals and/or thermal energy
into the reservoir.

Well stimulation include EOR &IOR

Well stimulation by

1- Well stimulation by surfactants

The stimulation is usually carried out with a dilute solution of 2%
or 3% surfactant.

dilute solution such as : diesel oil, xylene , kerosene , salt water 2%

2% KCl.

2- Well stimulation by acids

It is a technique to stimulate wells for improving well inflow

performance. In the treatment, acid solution is injected into the
formation to dissolve some of the minerals to recover permeability of
sandstones (removing skin) or increase permeability
of carbonates near the wellbore.
Minerals that are present in sandstone pores include bentonite ,
kaolinite, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and others.
The most commonly used acids for dissolving these minerals are
hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) and Acetic acid
(HAc).

The acid type and acid concentration in acid solution used in acidizing is
selected on the basis of minerals in the
formation and field experience. For sandstones, the typical treatments
usually consist of a mixture of 3% HF and 12 % HCl.

3- Well stimulation by Steam

‫ﺑﺧﺎر‬

Steam stimulation is also known as cyclic steam injection, steam soak

‫ﻧﻘﻊ‬

and puff. In this process, steam is injected into a producing well for a
‫وﻧﻔﺧﺔ‬

specified period of time (normally 2 to 3 weeks).

Following this the well is shut in for a few days t o allow for sufficient
heat dissipation and
‫ﺗﺑدﯾد‬
then it is placed back o n production.

Heat from the injected steam increases the reservoir temperature,

resulting in a pronounced increase in
‫واﺿﺢ‬
the mobility of heavy oils by lowering oil viscosity. This results in a
corresponding improvement in production rates.
