A lesson plan is a teacher's detailed description of the course of instruction for a lesson. A daily lesson
plan is developed by a teacher to guide class learning. Details of the lesson plan will vary depending on
the preference of the teacher, subject being covered, and the needs of the students. I investigate the lesson
plan prepared by British council. That lesson plan is well organized and well developed. On the first page
of the lesson plan we can see the topic of the lesson and which grades this plan is suitable for.
Additionally, there is given the level of the students too. The topic of the lesson is “Green classroom” and
it is suitable for use with primary learners of English aged 6-8. The time limit is about 75 mins.
• This lesson plan is appropriate for every student who is at A1 level at CEFR. Both girls and boys can
participate in this lesson. In addition I should mention that, students learn to make their classroom greener
during the class. This lesson plan is suitable for pupils anyway in spite of their gender, needs or cultural
backgrounds. But as a teacher while planning the plan they gave extra attention to the level of the
students. Honestly, it is the most important part of the organizing a lesson. Because your students should
be able to do the given tasks by you. If as a teacher you don’t pay attention to this step, then you may lose
your pupils’ interest to your class.
• This lesson plan consists of different language areas and skills. The teacher who prepared this plan gave
consideration to make various tasks to the students. This plan includes speaking, writing, revising
vocabulary, group working activities and also while attending on them students can practice on their
pronunciation and their grammar too. The lesson begins with a warm up activity as mentioned like
warmer stage. In the warm up activity students should reorder the word which given by their teacher and
after finding out what is the word then one of them should say it. Why this activity is necessary? In my
humble opinion, according to this task firstly, the teacher shake up his or her students and this process
help her/him to catch their attention. Secondly, while doing these task students can check their spelling
skill by reorder the given word. Also this is one of the ways of revising the previous vocabulary. The
second stage which is called “Vocabulary” also helpful for the students. In this step speaking, listening
and writing skills are consisted. The teacher shows students some pictures of classrooms and invites them
to say the name of the objects. Then they should make a list of those words. If necessary the teacher can
add more words to their list. After all, teacher should say the words and students find them on the
pictures. This helps them to improve their listening skill. Through these tasks students can do writing,
listening, speaking at the same time. It means the teacher integrated 3 most important actions at once.
Third step is called “Discussion”. Teacher shows the pictures again and students compare those pictures
of classroom with their own classroom. This activity is for improving speaking ability while it helps to
make sentences correctly too. The teacher should listen to their ideas and accept all the reasonable views.
I think it would be better if the teacher correct their mistakes after they gave their point. It helps to them
to find out their mistakes and second time they will not repeat those again. Fourth step of this lesson is for
introducing new theme to students. Firstly, teacher should try to find out what the student know about the
green classroom or green planet. After this process, teacher gives some information about the theme.
Never forget to encourage the students to share their ideas. The activities which were mentioned in above
held in the pre stage of the lesson. We all know the lessons will be in three stages. They are pre, while
and post stages. For preparing the well-organized plan we should make these all three stages. Now, the
most important part of the lesson is while stage. The teacher chose activity which is named “Find the
differences”. This task is a pair work. Firstly, both of the students will describe the pictures which were
given by their teacher by folding them. Then, both of the students should write to their notebook the
differences of the object in their photos. This activity is for pupil as writing and speaking activity.
Teacher provides the students with unknown vocabulary and read them with loud voice. Through this
action students can learn how to pronounce the new words. Katherine Bilsborough paid attention to the
discussion part also to conduct the lesson more student centered. And it will be helpful to them to feel
themselves more confident during the class. Brainstorming ideas is one of the interesting tasks to do.
Because, the teacher said to write the words “Do” and “Don’t” on the blackboard and the students should
write what they can do or not to make their class greener. This activity helps to think critically. During
the class the teacher chose one more activity as a group work. It is named like make posters stage. The
students should draw what they can do or not to make green classes. And the teacher displays the great
ideas. This activity is the way of improving imagination, critical thinking ability, speaking, working with
team ability and etc. This task given to the students as a post stage of the lesson. At the end of the lesson
teacher prefer to make an optional task. Choosing a song is the good way to help the students to
encourage their spirit to love their planet.
The aim and objectives of this lesson is achievable. The teacher tried to achieve all the aims
through making creative tasks. For example the first aim was to raise awareness of sustainability
issues. Teacher gave information about the theme in the introducing part. The second aim was to
review and learn vocabulary related to the classroom. We can see that more activities included
revising the words such as reordering words, point and say activity and others. These two
activities concentrated on the previous vocabulary while in the find the differences activity
teacher gave attention to the new words which were necessary to complete the tasks.
Additionally, by organizing speaking activities the students can learn how to make their own
speech. For developing creativity and critical thinking the teacher did the brainstorming ideas
task and also making poster was the way of improving creativity. In the brainstorming ideas task
the students used their imagination skill and tried to find out the ways of making their classroom
greener. Promoting communication and collaborative skills and also developing speaking and
visual literacy teacher organized discussion and various speaking activities. All of these help
them to develop their speaking skill and also they can learn how to collaborate with other
students. Especially, in the making poster stage they learn to work with team in practice. Because
of these special tasks we can say that the teacher made the best suitable lesson plan which can
help to achieve to the all set goals.
For sequencing the lesson the teacher preferred TBL learning structure. Why TBL? Because TBL
is the inductive way of teaching and on this learning structure student will be more on focus.
Task-based language learning uses practical tasks to help students find their own useful
vocabulary and language structures. In this lesson plan, we can see the teacher mostly used
different tasks for students to make them work on them. Through this action teacher keep the
attention of students and they were on the focus.
The activities are logically sequenced and all of them contributed to achieve the lesson aims.
Actually, the activities help to teacher to obtain all of the set goals step by step. As we mentioned
above the tasks mostly focused on speaking activities, because the teacher chose TBL learning
structure and this way of teaching concentrate on student centered learning. We can see on the list
of the aims developing speaking and visual literacy skills, promoting communication and
collaborative skills and others. All of these activities are only aimed for obtaining these
outcomes. In my point of view, the teacher chose the best tasks for achieving those outcomes. By
making posters or imagination tasks help them to develop students’ creativity and critical
thinking ability.
Of course, time management is very vital during preparing a lesson plan. In this lesson plan all of
the tasks are well-organized. The teacher wrote the limit limits for all the activities. For example,
warm up activities took 5 minutes. Vocabulary part and discussion stages took 10 minutes while
introducing part took just 5 minutes. The some activities were during between 10 or 15 minutes
such as find the differences and discussion parts. The lesson plan is planned for 75 mins. I think
the important part of the lesson is about 70 mins and last part optional task is approximately 5
mins. All of the tasks are very realistic to achieve with these time limits.
The activities made by teacher are very colorful. Choosing the activities in this way makes the
lesson very interesting. Teacher can collect the students’ attention easily. One of the activities is
for writing, one of them for speaking; other one is for listening while the next one is for reading.
The teacher organized the lesson plan by integrating all 4 important skills. So, we can decide
there is variety of interaction patterns in the lesson plan.
As we know, the class includes different types of students. They have their own way to learn
something quickly. For example someone can be visual, auditory, and kinesthetic also pupil can
learn through reading and writing. It is very significant for teachers to plan lesson according to
their students’ interests. The lesson plan which was prepared by Katherine Bilsborough consisted
of different colorful activities. For instance, first activity “Warmer” or reordering the words.
Through this task students who are visual learners can learn new word easily. Because they
visualize the things they want to learn. When the teacher asks them to reorder the letter they
visualize the words and remember them quickly. Next example is finding the differences activity.
In this task teacher helps with new unknown words. When the teacher pronounce the new words
students who are auditory can remember them better rather than visual or kinesthetic learner.
Because auditory learner can learn new thing by just hearing them. In addition, the task also
includes writing the new words to their notebooks. By this action students who prefer to learn by
reading or writing can memorize the words easily rather than other type of students. We can
decide that, this lesson plan is very appropriate to all of the students.
Honestly, I mostly liked about time management and also various tasks which is prepared for this
lesson. The teacher controlled the time very well and it helped to achieve all the outcomes of the
lesson plan. The teacher paid attention to the little details of the lesson. As a future teacher I also
learnt a lot of new activities through this lesson plan. Teacher should be very attentive to the
pupils’ level while organizing lesson plan. The given tasks should be very clear and
understandable for students. If the tasks is not suitable to the pupils’ level they may feel bored
and easily lose their interest to the teacher’s lesson. Since, Katherine made the plan very beautiful
the students had no time to lose their attention. I love this plan because of these special reasons.
To be honest, if I taught this lesson to the students, I would change something on the discussion
stage which took 10 or 15 mins. Firstly, the teacher should write the questions on the board. I
think instead of writing the questions on the board the teacher could prepare a little different
thing. For example, giving readymade handouts to students and they can work with their partners.
Because, giving a speech is not easy work for new learners. They may feel a little shy to give a
speech in front of whole class. In that case, if I was a teacher I would be a little attentive to my
introvert students too and try to make pair works for them, especially in the speaking parts. I
don’t want to say, we should make the all speaking activities for pair works, but we should do
some of them for partners. In that case, all the students can share their ideas with each other’s.
Also, I would like to change something on stage “Brainstorming”. Katherine chose just write the
words on two headings “Do” and “Do not”. I would prefer to do a little play roles what they can
do or not, to make their class greener. By the way of conclusion, I like this lesson plan. I also
want to make my lesson plan by getting inspiration from this plan too.
