Performance Task: Investigating the Motion of an Object

Objective:

To describe the motion of an object by measuring the distance it travels over a specific period
and trace how its position changes over time.

Task Outline

1. Problem: What is the relationship between the time taken by an object to move and
the distance it travels? How does changing the speed of the object affect the distance
covered in a given time?
2. Hypothesis: Ask the students to write a hypothesis based on their prediction of the
object’s motion.
Example:
“If an object moves faster, then it will cover more distance in a shorter amount of
time.”

3. Procedure:
o Select an object that can be easily pushed or pulled (e.g., a toy car, a small
ball).
o Mark a starting point on the ground.
o Use a stopwatch to measure the time while moving the object.
o Measure the distance covered by the object after a set time (e.g., 10 seconds,
15 seconds).
o Record the distance traveled at different intervals of time.
o Repeat the experiment by pushing or pulling the object with different speeds
(slow, medium, fast).

Materials needed:

o Measuring tape
o Stopwatch
o Small object (toy car, ball)
o Pen and paper

4. Testing the Hypothesis:

o After performing the procedure, compare the distances covered by the object
at different speeds.
o Record and plot the results in a table showing time intervals and distances
traveled.
o Check if the results align with the hypothesis.

5. Ideate:
o Ask students to think of different ways they could test the object’s motion.
Examples:
“What if you used a larger object? Would it cover more or less distance? What
if the surface was rougher?”

6. Conclusion:
o Based on the results, what can be concluded about the relationship between
time, speed, and distance?
o Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not?
o How can this experiment be applied in real-life situations, like in
understanding the speed of vehicles or the movement of people?
