Facts Concepts Generalizations

Facts as content
in social studies

Facts are things that are

verifiable truth about things or
happenings around us. Social
Studies rely on facts about the
society, how facts are collected
and the use of this information
for the improvement of the
society where we live.
EXAMPLE
Examples of social facts include social
roles, norms, laws, values, beliefs, rituals,
and customs. Violating social facts
confirms their existence because people
who act against social facts are typically
sanctioned. Sociology is one of the primary
disciplines in which social facts are studied.
Concepts
Concepts are general or abstract
ideas that we have about things
around us. Hence, Social Studies
uses concepts like culture,
religion, environment, family, etc
to make us understand the
interaction between man and his
environment.
What are concepts
and why are they
important in social
studies?
Let's Discuss
Concepts are the Explicitly focusing instruction
on concepts emphasizes big
overarching ideas or
ideas that are universal. Deep
enduring understandings
thinking about concepts
that are threaded through
enables students to transfer
the K–12 social studies their learning to multiple
standards. Power, situations. Students are able
regulation, distribution and to see connections within and
innovation are examples of across disciplines when they
concepts. engage directly with concepts.
Generalization
This is simply the formulation of
general principles from the detailed
facts we know or have about something
that has been studied for a reasonable
period of time. For example, based on
the detailed facts we have about the
form of marriage commonly practiced
in Africa, we can generalise that
polygamy is commonplace in Africa
compared with Europe.
Today's Lesson
Facts are specific, small pieces of
information that can be verified and proven.
Concepts are abstract ideas that are more
difficult to define and understand, but are
often the basis of generalizations.
Generalizations are broad statements and
ideas that are based on facts and concepts.
