Q1:
(a) Explain the terms travelling wave and standing wave as applied to
transmission line.
(b) An underground cable of inductance 0.189 mH/km and the
capacitance 0.3 uf/km is connected to an overhead line having an
inductance of 0.009 uF/km. calculate the transmitted and reflected
voltage and current waves at the junction, if a surge of 200kV travels to
the junction:
i. A long the cable.
ii. Along the overhead line.
Q2: Two long transmission lines each having a surge impedance of 400
ohm are connected by a cable having surge impedance of 50 ohm. If a short
pulse of magnitude 10 kV travels along the first line towards the junction,
determine with help of Bewleys lattice diagram, the magnitudes of the first
and second pulses entering the second line.
Q3: The single line diagram of a sample 3 bus power system shown in
figure1, using Gauss-Siedel method determine the phasor values of the
voltage at buses 2 and 3. Perform only two iterations. The data of the system
given below:
Generation Load
Bus code Assumed bus voltage MW MVAR MW MVAR
1 1.05+j0.0 - - 0 0
2 1+j0 50 30 305.6 140.2
3 1+j0 0.0 0.0 138.6 45.2

Q4: In the two-bus system shown in Figure 58, bus 1 is a slack bus with
V1 =1.0˪00 Pu. A load of 150MWand 50 Mvar is taken from bus 2. The line
admittance is y12 = 10˪-73.740 Pu on a base of 100 MVA. The expression
for real and reactive power at bus 2 is given by:
P2 =10|V2||V1|cos (106.260-δ2+ δ1) +10|V2|2 cos (-73.740)
Q2= -10|V2||V1|sin (106.260-δ2+ δ1)-10|V2|2 sin (-73.740)
Using Newton-Raphson method, obtain the voltage magnitude and phase
angle of bus 2. Start with an initial estimate of|V2| (0) =1.0 Pu and δ2 (0) =00
pu. Perform two iterations.
