Tutorial 2 – Curvilinear Motion (Circular Motion), Relative Motion

Question 1: A train travels along a horizontal circular curve that has a radius of 600
m. If the speed of the train is uniformly increases from 40 km/h to 60 km/h in 5 s,
determine the magnitude of the acceleration at the instant the speed of the train is 50
km/h. Ans: a=1.5×104 km/h2

Question 2: Magnetic tape is being transferred from reel A to reel B and passes
around idler pulleys C and D. At a certain instant, point P1 on the tape is in contact
with pulley C and point P2 is in contact with pulley D. If the normal component of
acceleration of P1 is 40 m/s2 and the tangential component of acceleration of P2 is 30
m/s2 at this instant, compute the corresponding speed v of the tape, the magnitude of
the total acceleration of P1, and the magnitude of the total accelerationof P2.
Ans: vB = 2 m/s, aP1 = 50 m/s2, aP2 = 85.4 m/s2

Question 3: Two planes A and B are flying at the same altitude. If their velocity are
vA=600 km/h and vB=500 km/h such that the angle between their straightline course is
α=75°, determine the velocity of plane A with respect to plane B.

Ans: vA/B=875 km/h; θ=41.5° θ

Question 4: At the instant shown, the car at A is travelling at 10 m/s around the curve
while increasing its speed at 5 m/s2. The car at B is travelling at 18.5 m/s along the
straightaway and increasing its speed at 2 m/s2. Determine the relative velocity and
relative acceleration of A with respect to B at this instant.
Ans: vA/B=13.44 m/s; θ=31.7° θ
