Meter reading and bill collection is one of the most important work for utilities. ge Lighting Veryco TM BiMAX® AMI system facilitates
efficient and effective operations in several ways: eliminating the operations and maintenance (O&M) expenses related to meter
reading by automating this function; reducing the number of visits to a premise associated with a meter by automating the
turn-on/turn-off function; reducing theft by indicating when someone is tampering with a meter; and automatically reporting
consumption for all meters connected to the network, thereby reducing the number of “lost” meters. Smart meters will allow the
capture of distribution information that may enable analysis to help prevent distribution failures before they occur.

ARCHITECTURE DESCRIPTION
Section 1.
AMI/
Design Standardized Design Principle
Principle AMI is a relatively mature set of advanced measurement systems. There are already many international
AMI projects in operation. Based on the practical experience in AMI in several regions, VerycoTM
BiMAX® focuses on practicality and operability in functional specifications and meets project
requirements. While the function follows the international general functional requirements, it further
standardizes the advanced application of the system, especially for the performance requirements in the
technical architecture and data storage architecture for standardized design.
Section 2.
Reliability and Stability Principle
VerycoTM BiMAX® is used to store the power consumption data of Utilities. This data belongsto the
core data assets of Utilities, and the reliability and stability of the system should be placed first.
Starting from these five aspects of system architecture, technical measures, equipment performance,
system management and technical support, we provide a full range of guarantees to ensure the reliability
and stability of the system operation, to achieve the maximum mean time between failures, and provide
Active/Standby failover measures and data backup measures to ensure the normal operation of the
system and data security.
Section 3.
Extensibility Principle
VerycoTM BiMAX®’s design meets the increasing needs of Utilities equipment such as metering
instruments and terminal devices. Using distributed technologies can ensure certain redundancy for
accessed capacity and can also rapidly meet the increasing accessed devices by increasing hardware/
software resources. By the function of supporting all kinds of statutes, it allows Utilities to access diverse
metering instruments from different manufactures.
At the same time, the function architecture of VerycoTM BiMAX® also needs high flexibility and
extensibility to meet the future demand for change and application development. In technology, we
used the distributed collection frameworks and micro-services, which made the system more elastic.
Section 4.
The principle of Easy Maintainability
The system has good maintainability, for example, the system provides intuitive and easy-to-use operating
conditions monitoring, message log management, remote upgrading tools and other functions. After
the official operation, maintenance costs are low.
Section 5.
Principle of Openness
In the overall design, VerycoTM BiMAX® adheres to the principle of openness, and choose thegeneral
software/hardware products and technologies which meet the openness and international
standardization. This system provides the standard interface (such as IEC62056, IEC61968 etc.) for
external, to meet the information interaction among the systems of VerycoTM BiMAX® AMI and the
seamless integration of system data from the third party.
Section 6.
Principle of Security
The design of VerycoTM BiMAX® fully considers the principle of security to prevent the intrusionof
unauthorized users and the leakage of confidential information. For example, for the remote-control
relay on/off of VerycoTM BiMAX® HES, electricity bills recharge of VerycoTM BiMAX®PPM and those
operations which involve benefits of electricity consumers, we will conduct the securitydesign from
the aspects of the firewall, key management, and privilege authentication.
P. 16
AMI Principle
The overall architecture of Veryco TM BiMAX® AMI solution plan is divided into System Integration Layer, AMI Interface Layer, AMI
Core Layer, Communication Layer and Device Layer. provides the corresponding core system and equipment for each layer,
including HES, DCU and Smart Meters. In addition to the AMI overall solution, the data storage model and functions of

COMMON MODULE
(Helpers&Utilities)
On top of the hardware platform, a virtualization approach is used to separate functional components of the entire system
based on functional, performance and security requirements. Virtualization is an integrated concept of architectural design.
We recommend setting up at least two secure zones (DMZs). A zone includes all virtual machines that need to communicate
with external systems such as the Southbound API or Portal API. The database server is always in the highest security zone.
We support Oracle, MySQL database management systems. The database adopts data partitioning and data replication as an
optimized table structure to meet the needs of massive data systems.
Internally, there are real-time processes and planning processes. For example, real-time processes are concerned with storing
and examining raw data streams. Other processes, such as preprocessing, reporting, exporting, etc., can be implemented as
jobs with a given process schedule. So that the system performance is optimized.

NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
According to the system-building requirements, we provide Veryco BiMAX ® HES and Veryco BiMAX ® PPM, the
network architecture of AMI proposed contains three parts.
Section 1.
The AMI master station consists of three subsystems: Veryco TM BiMAX® MDMS, HES and Veryco BiMAX®
PPM, which are responsible for data acquisition and prepayment respectively. The AMI is separated into two independent
subsystems to facilitate MDMS to access multiple HESs by unified standards. The system is in line with the current development
trend of AMI solutions in the world.
Section 2.
The Main Station of System is mainly composed of a Master Network, a Database Server, a Data Collection Server, a Calculation
Server, a Web Server, an Interface Server, a Workstation, and related network devices. The network framework supports
extending hardware devices according to the increasing of accessed DCU and meter of project. For example, in the future,
the Message-oriented Middleware module can be independently deployed to a separate Message Server, and the In-memory
Database module can be independently deployed to a separate In-memory Database Server, and a separate Hardware Load
Balancer can be deployed to meet the reading requirements of the mass gauge.
Section 3.
Communication Channel refers to the communication channel between the Master Station of System and the Collection
terminal, mainly including GPRS, fiber optic private network, etc.
Section 4.
The collection equipment refers to the collection terminal and metering equipment installed at the site, mainly including
Substation collection terminal, specialized Transformer collection terminal, public Transformer collection terminal, low voltage
collectively reading terminal, meter and other equipment.
P. 20
AMI/
Master Network
The Master Network mainly includes three parts: the main network, the communication subnet, and the
interconnection with the third-party system. The main network consists of the database server, the application
server, the web server, and the main network switch. To ensure stable operation of the system, a dual-network
structure is usually adopted. The communication subnet consists of the collection server, the communication
subnet switch, and the firewall. In order to ensure stable operation of the collection, a dual-network structure is
usually adopted. Interconnection with third-party systems is mainly composed of interface servers and firewalls.
The master network can be configured as a dual network to meet high availability requirements.
Network Architecture
Database Server
The Database Server is responsible for centralized processing, storage, and reading of system
data. The design of the Database Server should meet the requirements of the security, stability,
high load and data access performance of the system through the technology of multi-machine
cluster.
Independent storage devices with high-performance are used to meet the requirements of system
performance, scale, and storage age. The storage device is recommended to use a SAN-based
disk array to facilitate the expansion of the database server cluster. The main configurations are as
follows:
Parts and power modules can be hot-swapped. While the single-point equipment has
high reliability, the structure is redundantly configured to avoid failure of single point,
and RAID technology is used to protect data security;
Be able to extend the system processing capability, storage capacity and I/O
capability online, uninterruptedly, and dynamically.
Network The Web Server mainly runs Web service modules, including Tomcat,
WebLogic, and JBoss etc., and provides Web publishing services.
Web Server According to the scale of the users who log in at the later stage, a service
cluster can be configured through Ngnix to meet high performance and
high availability requirements.
Network The Vending Server mainly runs the Veryco BiMAX® PPM and is
responsible for providing the vending services to the customers.
Vending Server Veryco BiMAX® PPM module adopts the STS standard for vending services
and supports to integrate with Veryco BiMAX® HES through
adopting the third-party interface protocols.
Network Architecture
Data Collection Server
The Data Collection Server is the only interface of communication between the Veryco TM BiMAX®
HES and the on-site collection terminal or meter. All communications with the on-site collection terminal or
meter is handled by the Data Collection Server, so the requirements for real-time, security and stability of
the server are high. According to the estimation of the number of accessing devices, the design scheme is
as follows, with respect to the configuration number, performance requirements, and security protection
measures of the collection server.
The collection server has a grouping function to support centralized collection of large-scale systems;
According to the number of access devices, each group of collection servers operates in the mode
of dual-machine hot standby or load balancing. When one server fails, the other server automatically
takes over all communication tasks of the failed server to ensure the normal operation of the system;
For the communication channel using the public network, it is recommended to add a firewall and
an authentication server to improve the security of access. For the company’s self-built fiber-optic
private network channel, it can directly access the collection server.
Network Architecture
Function Matrix
The system supports cross-platform software environment: the operating system supports Windows,
Linux and Unix; the database supports Oracle, MySQL and other databases; the application server
not only supports commercial application server systems such as WebLogic, but also supports open
source application servers JBoss, Tomcat, etc.
This technical solution completely adopts the architecture of J2EE B/S, and the HES layer adopts
system of Veryco TM
BiMAX® HES. The data collection, calculation and interface parts meet
the requirements of large-capacity data acquisition and real-time processing through independent
distributed modules. MDMS Layer supports data integration and real-time data verification, supports
customer meters’ file management, supports centralized management and analysis of various types
of data (such as water, electricity, gas, heat, etc.), and provides browser-based WEB display service
to meet the needs of distributed applications of workstations.

System Report
Function Live Meter List: Multiple meters might show offline for different reasons; for example, if there is
a load shedding in some areas. If we see any meter is offline for a long time, although there is
Management no load shading or no GSM network down issue, then there might be a possible meter bypass
case or some other unknown issue. Our AMI alerts utility so that they can send someone to
investigate the case.
Log-in History: Our AMI system store login history and if admin wants to see login and activity
history of any consumer, he has the right to check the history.

MANAGEMENT MODULE
Smart meter supports a load limiting function. When the customer exceeds the threshold value, power
supply is cut. Customer reduces load and power can be reconnected.
By this method utility can force consumer to use less power at peak time thereby load is shared
among the users thus preventing load shedding.
This distributed control feature can optimize utility’s control over load by significant extent
and reduce load shedding at peak times.
User will get limit exceeding notification at their smart phone in real time.
Utility can also notify customers about the planned load shedding start and stop time few
hours back via server to mobile app .
MDMS security: Different role has access right on different security level. Additionally, remote
access will be protected by encrypted data through https.
Security on Telco billing server: MDMS to Telco Bill pay server are connected through VPN
and data is encrypted using AES-128 protocol.
Data Security & Recovery: JAt extreme cases like burnout, data can be recovered from the
meter’s internal PCB. Connector is provided close to the memory chips for both powering
up & retrieving data from it.
Mother Child Concept: Smart meters can be registered as mother or child in server.A
group of meters can be registered as child meter under a mother meter. The server logic
always checks child meters and mother meter data. If there is a difference between child
meters and mother meter data, then it alerts utility engineers about possible theft of technical
fault. The server sums the child meters’ consumption data and checks it with the mother
meter’s consumption data. If there is a difference, then it alerts about possible bypassing.
The integration of GIS and AMI adds so much insight to an AMI network, it helps to understand the distribution
system and endpoints as one cohesive system. The combination of GIS and AMI also allows to create new billing
cycles and target particular issues of the system, rather than simply billing geographically co-located units.

System Function
Postpaid System
Veryco BiMAX® AMI solution also has postpaid solution for billing. We offer customization of the postpaid
solution according to Utility’s requirement. In postpaid system, billing calculation is done on theserver
side. The billing calculation sub module of the AMI calculates the monthly bill based upon the monthly
consumption data received from the meter. Admin can set the relevant fixed Billing items & multipliers as
factors below to calculate the monthly energy billing.
Energy Rate per unit Maximum Demand charge Minimum Charge VAT percentage
Sanctioned Demand charge Service charge PFC (power factor correction) charge
In postpaid system the meter relay remains turned on unless turned off manually. This control can also be
assigned into different account types. During the total lifecycle of the postpaid meter, depending on the
client’s requirement admin can have the control to manually turn on/off the meter at any given time.
Customizable Billing Form: Our AMI solution generates the bill according to a standard bill
form. We provide customization of the format of billing form based on utility’s requirement.
Consumer can also take a print out of the detailed bill.
Payment: Consumer can use the same smart payment options which are also available to
pre-paid consumer.
Interchangeable Plan/Package: Our Smart Meters can be switched to Prepaid system from
Postpaid system and Vice-versa. This is done by simply issuing a mode change secured
encrypted token provided by the admin account.
Due Bill Notification/Alarm: Admin can set a time limit after which meters with due bills will
get disconnected. Both Admin & Consumer can set a time limit after which consumers with
due bills will get both email and SMS as warning.

For communication we can use GSM network in combination of RF mesh or PLC as per
utility company requirement. In PLC Based solution we use star topology in Master/
Slave communication mode where all nodes (slave meters) are individually connected
to a DCU via PLC. The DCU acts as the “gateway for all meters. The data concentrator
Communication unit (DCU) connects to the central system via GPRS technology.
