Review of the previous lesson
B. Motivation:
Arrange the jumbled letters to reveal the names of PPE and tools used for bending of PVC pipes.
C.
.
Bending 90-degree PVC Elbow
Instruction: When you are ready to perform this task, ask your teacher to observe the process and to rate your
performance using the assessment criteria.
1. Prepare all the materials and equipment needed.
a. PVC
b. Dry rug
c. Wet and dry rug
d. Measuring tape
e. Pipe cutter
f. Marker
2. Wear Personal Protective Equipment
a. heat resistant gloves
b. safety goggles
c. hard hat
d. face mask respirator
Procedure:
3. Cut the uPVC pipe.
4. Determine the height of the bend.
5. Mark the tubing.
6. Add and subtract 10 cm in each side of the mark
7. Turn on heat gun
8. Warm up the pipe within the marker (1 to 2 inches away from the pipe)
9. While warming the pipe, rotate the pipe.
10. Bend
11. Massage the pipe with the dry rug
12. (If the pipe is in its exact bend 90°) Wipe the pipe with wet rug.
13. 13. Perform good housekeeping
Note: There are a lot of methods in heating the PVC pipe. You can use Oven, Butane torch, blowtorch, spring
bender. Etc.…
E. Generalization
When bending PVC conduit, there are several general principles to ensure a proper and effective bend. Here
are the key points to consider:
1. Type of PVC Conduit
Use the correct type of PVC conduit (Schedule 40 or Schedule 80) depending on the application and
environmental conditions.
2. Bending Tools
Manual Benders: These are available in various sizes and can handle different diameters of conduit.
Heat Gun: For more intricate bends, especially with larger diameters, heating the conduit can help
avoid cracking.
3. Bend Radius
Maintain a minimum bend radius, usually 6 times the conduit diameter, to prevent damage and ensure
proper installation. This is critical for electrical applications.
4. Marking the Bend
Before bending, mark the conduit at the desired point to ensure accuracy. Use a permanent marker or
tape to indicate where the bend will occur.
5. Technique
Cold Bending: Use a conduit bender to apply steady, even pressure. Avoid bending too quickly, which
can cause kinks.
Hot Bending: If heating, uniformly heat the section of conduit until it becomes pliable, then bend
gently.
6. Check Alignment
After bending, check the alignment and angle of the bend with a level or measuring tool to ensure it
meets specifications.
7. Support and Secure
After installation, support the conduit properly using straps or clamps to prevent sagging or movement.
8. Inspection
Inspect the bend for cracks or deformities. Proper bends should be smooth and continuous.
9. Consider Future Maintenance
When planning bends, consider accessibility for future maintenance or alterations.
10. Follow Local Codes
Always comply with local electrical codes and standards, which may dictate specific bending
requirements or practices.
By following these general guidelines, you can ensure a proper and efficient installation of PVC conduit in
your projects.
F. Application
Bend the PVC conduit into different angles, following the assessment criteria below.
IV. Evaluation
