Transcript of Interview with ITC HR Representative

Interviewer (Student): Good morning, and thank you for meeting with us. We’re
working on a report for our communication subject, focusing on ITC Limited. We’d
like to understand ITC’s values, culture, and what qualities the company looks for in
candidates, especially for roles in marketing and finance.
HR Representative (ITC): Good morning! I’m glad to help. ITC is a dynamic place
to work, and we’re always interested in attracting talented people who can contribute
to our growth and uphold our values.

Values and Organizational Culture

Interviewer: To start, could you tell us about the core values that drive ITC and how
they shape the company culture?

HR Representative: Certainly. ITC’s culture is shaped by four main values:

integrity, excellence, respect for people, and a commitment to sustainability. Each of
these values influences how we work, make decisions, and interact with one another.

Integrity is foundational at ITC. It’s about being honest and ethical, not just in big
decisions but also in everyday interactions. For example, we have a strict policy on
transparency in sourcing materials. Our suppliers are vetted for ethical practices, and
employees are encouraged to report any irregularities they observe, ensuring that
every part of our supply chain reflects our integrity standards. This commitment to
integrity builds trust internally and with our external partners.

Excellence means striving for high standards in everything we do. A recent example
is from our food products division, where we launched a new product line after
extensive research and development to ensure it met both health standards and taste
expectations. The team worked tirelessly to achieve a product that was not only high-
quality but also aligned with consumer needs and preferences. We believe excellence
is about constantly challenging ourselves to innovate and improve.

Respect for people underscores the importance of a diverse, inclusive work

environment. At ITC, this is evident in our collaborative project structures. Recently,
for a brand repositioning campaign, our marketing team worked closely with the
finance and product development teams. The different perspectives contributed to a
successful campaign and showed how we value input from all areas, fostering a
culture of mutual respect and teamwork.

- Lastly, our commitment to sustainability is core to our mission. One initiative
that highlights this is our forestry program, where we work with local farmers to plant
trees and enhance biodiversity. This program not only benefits the environment but
also provides income for rural communities, reflecting our goal to create value for
society alongside business growth. Sustainability isn’t just a value on paper; it’s
embedded in our operations, products, and even packaging initiatives.

Interviewer: Those examples really bring ITC’s values to life. It’s inspiring to see
how they’re integrated into daily operations.

Employee Culture and Expectations

Interviewer: Could you tell us about ITC’s expectations from its employees and the
kind of work environment new hires can expect?

HR Representative: ITC looks for individuals who are adaptable, collaborative,

and committed to continuous improvement. Our work environment is dynamic and
collaborative, so adaptability is crucial. For instance, during the pandemic, we quickly
adapted our supply chains and processes to ensure that products reached consumers on
time. Employees who can think on their feet and handle changing circumstances
thrive here.

● Teamwork is another big focus. One example would be our cross-functional

project teams. In a recent initiative to launch eco-friendly packaging, we had
experts from marketing, R&D, and supply chain work together. It was a
challenging project, but the collaborative effort led to a breakthrough that aligned
with our sustainability goals. Cross-functional collaboration is a cornerstone of
our culture, and it allows employees to learn from each other and solve complex
problems more effectively.

● For support, new hires are paired with mentors, and we encourage a lot of
cross-departmental exposure to give them a well-rounded view of the business.
ITC believes that exposure to various functions early on helps employees grow
and find their niche within the organization.

Interviewer: That’s very encouraging for fresh graduates. How does ITC support
career growth for new employees?

HR Representative: Career growth is a big focus for us. We have structured career
paths, and new employees are given a lot of support in their initial years to help them
grow within the company. For example, we have mentorship programs where
experienced employees guide new hires, helping them navigate challenges and
explore growth opportunities. We also conduct training programs regularly to build
technical, managerial, and leadership skills. Employees are encouraged to take
ownership of their roles, and high performers are recognized and given leadership
responsibilities early on.

Skills and Qualities ITC Looks For

Interviewer: Could you elaborate on the specific skills ITC looks for in candidates,
especially in the marketing and finance functions?

HR Representative: For marketing roles, we prioritize analytical skills, creativity,

and excellent communication. A good example is our campaigns for ITC’s personal
care brands, where data analytics teams worked alongside marketers to target
consumers more effectively. Being able to interpret data and convert it into actionable
insights is essential for success in marketing here. Creativity is also key, as our brands
strive to stand out in highly competitive markets.

● For finance roles, quantitative skills and attention to detail are critical.
Finance professionals at ITC are involved in everything from budgeting to
financial analysis for new projects. We recently assessed the feasibility of
expanding one of our manufacturing units, which required detailed financial
modeling and risk assessment. An eye for detail ensured that the project met
budgetary requirements and aligned with our financial goals.

● Across both roles, we value leadership potential and a strong ethical

grounding. Leaders at ITC are expected to uphold our values, set an example,
and make decisions that are good for the business, society, and the environment.
We believe that leadership is demonstrated through action, responsibility, and a
focus on long-term impact.

Interviewer: Those sound like valuable qualities. Are there any particular traits that
ITC appreciates in all its employees?

HR Representative: Yes, we highly value teamwork, resilience, and alignment with

our sustainability goals. ITC looks for individuals who can work collaboratively,
handle challenges, and share our commitment to sustainable development. A strong
example would be our response to natural disasters. During the recent floods in certain
regions, employees volunteered for relief efforts, working alongside local authorities
to distribute essential supplies. Such actions reflect our commitment to sustainability
and social responsibility.
Alignment with ITC’s Needs

Interviewer: That brings me to another question. What advice would you give to
students or recent graduates who want to align their resumes with ITC’s needs?

HR Representative: I would advise students to highlight experiences that reflect ITC’s

values and desired skills. For example, if you’ve been involved in projects that
required teamwork or cross-functional collaboration, emphasize that. Any experience
with sustainable or ethical initiatives, such as participating in environmental projects
or volunteering, would also stand out to us. Tailoring your resume to showcase your
values as well as your achievements can make a strong impression. We look for
people who go beyond technical skills and bring a holistic, values-driven approach to
their work.

Interviewer: Thank you. This insight will be extremely useful for us as we prepare
our report and shape our career goals.

HR Representative: You’re very welcome! It’s great to see students taking the time
to understand ITC’s values and culture. Best of luck with your report and future
endeavors!

Interviewer: Thank you once again for your time and insights. We truly appreciate it.

Methodology

Objective
The primary aim of this report is to explore the values, ethics, and skills promoted by
ITC Limited, specifically focusing on roles in marketing and finance. By thoroughly
analyzing ITC’s organizational culture and expectations, we seek to understand the
competencies the company values most in its employees. This will enable us to align
our professional profiles and CVs with ITC’s criteria, thereby enhancing our
suitability for future employment opportunities with the company.

This project was undertaken by a group of 5-6 students and was conducted over a span
of three weeks. We employed a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both primary and
secondary data sources to gather comprehensive information. Primary data collection
was carried out in the second week, while secondary data was collected continuously
over the entire three-week period. Each type of data contributed distinct and valuable
insights, allowing us to develop a holistic understanding of ITC’s corporate ethos and
expectations from potential employees.

Primary Data Collection

To obtain first-hand insights into ITC’s organizational culture and employee

expectations, we conducted a structured interview with an HR professional from ITC.
This individual provided critical insights into the values, work culture, and specific
skill sets ITC prioritizes in candidates for marketing and finance roles. The interview
was designed to delve into several key areas, including ITC’s core values, employee
culture, recruitment expectations, and the competencies essential for excelling in
marketing and finance positions.

The interview process was carefully planned and executed to maximize the depth and
relevance of information gathered. The questions were crafted to focus on ITC’s
ethical standards, the attributes ITC deems important in its employees, and the specific
competencies required for success in the company’s marketing and finance divisions.
The interview lasted approximately one hour, and the responses provided by the HR
representative were recorded with permission for later transcription and analysis. This
transcription process enabled us to extract recurring themes and keywords, such as
“innovation,” “ethical responsibility,” and “analytical prowess,” which were
consistently emphasized as desirable traits for employees at ITC.

This primary data served as the foundation for our analysis, offering an authentic
perspective on ITC’s expectations. The direct information from an ITC insider
allowed us to validate or contrast the secondary data collected from online sources,
ensuring a balanced and accurate representation of ITC’s hiring criteria and employee
expectations.

Secondary Data Collection

Our secondary data collection was conducted over a continuous three-week period and
involved several online platforms and digital resources. By consulting multiple
sources, we ensured a robust and multi-dimensional understanding of ITC’s
requirements for marketing and finance roles. We focused particularly on LinkedIn
and Naukri.com for job descriptions, ITC’s official website for company values and
CSR activities, as well as ITC’s social media pages, including Instagram and
Facebook, to observe the company’s culture and motivational content shared by
leadership.
The first source of secondary data was LinkedIn, where we reviewed a selection of ten
job postings from ITC over the past six months. These postings were analyzed weekly
to stay updated with any new listings or changes in job requirements. Each job
description provided insight into the specific qualifications, experience, and skills ITC
seeks in candidates, particularly for roles in marketing and finance. For instance,
LinkedIn job posts highlighted essential skills such as strategic thinking, analytical
ability, and familiarity with digital marketing tools in the case of marketing roles, as
well as financial acumen and advanced data analysis skills for finance roles. This
platform allowed us to capture an up-to-date snapshot of ITC’s demands and
expectations for prospective employees.

In addition to LinkedIn, we consulted Naukri.com as a complementary source to

cross-reference the information gathered from LinkedIn. On Naukri.com, we reviewed
eight recent job listings specific to marketing and finance positions at ITC. These
postings provided additional details on the day-to-day tasks associated with each role,
as well as the level of expertise required. Analyzing job requirements on both
LinkedIn and Naukri.com allowed us to compare the qualifications expected across
multiple platforms, enhancing the accuracy of our findings. The data gathered from
Naukri.com emphasized the importance of competencies like communication skills,
project management abilities, and a proactive approach to learning—qualities that
align with ITC’s standards for high-performing employees.

Further, we explored ITC’s official website, focusing on the About Us and Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) sections. This website review helped us understand ITC’s
mission, vision, and involvement in sustainability initiatives, which form a significant
part of the company’s public identity. The About Us section detailed ITC’s
commitment to sustainable business practices and its dedication to community
welfare. Additionally, the CSR section highlighted several initiatives ITC has
undertaken to contribute to environmental sustainability and social development. This
information provided context for understanding the ethical standards ITC expects
from its employees. By learning about ITC’s emphasis on CSR, we were able to
identify the ethical dimension of ITC’s corporate culture, which values responsibility
toward both society and the environment. This insight was essential for shaping our
understanding of ITC’s values, which prospective employees are expected to align
with.

Social media platforms, specifically Instagram and Facebook, were another key
component of our secondary data collection strategy. Over a period of three months,
we reviewed approximately 15 motivational posts on ITC’s Instagram page, with
particular attention to posts featuring messages from ITC’s CEO and HR department.
These posts often included inspirational messages directed at employees, as well as
announcements of company achievements. We also observed around 10 CSR-related
posts on ITC’s Facebook page during this period, which showcased the company’s
involvement in various community projects. This social media activity allowed us to
gain insight into ITC’s internal culture, particularly the values of motivation,
employee recognition, and community engagement. By analyzing these posts, we
noted a recurring theme of appreciation for employees who demonstrate dedication
and innovative thinking, which are qualities ITC actively encourages and celebrates.
This engagement with ITC’s social media content offered a unique perspective on the
company’s efforts to foster a positive and motivating workplace.

Lastly, we examined recent announcements of employee awards and recognitions on

ITC’s website and social media channels to identify specific competencies that ITC
formally acknowledges. Over the past six months, we reviewed five award
announcements, each highlighting an employee’s contributions to the company. The
skills and achievements recognized in these awards included teamwork, leadership,
problem-solving abilities, and ethical integrity. By studying these recognitions, we
gained a clearer understanding of the competencies that ITC considers exemplary and
desirable in its employees. These traits served as benchmarks for the skills and values
that our group aimed to reflect in our CVs.

Summary of Data Collection Process

In conclusion, the combination of primary and secondary data sources enabled us to

develop a comprehensive understanding of ITC Limited’s expectations and values.
The structured interview with an HR representative provided valuable insider insights,
while the secondary sources, such as LinkedIn, Naukri.com, ITC’s official website,
and social media platforms, offered additional perspectives and confirmed the findings
from our primary data. The detailed exploration of these sources allowed us to build a
nuanced profile of ITC’s ideal employee, especially for marketing and finance roles,
emphasizing qualities such as ethical responsibility, strategic thinking, and community
engagement. Through this methodological approach, we gathered the necessary data
to effectively align our CVs with ITC’s corporate values and standards, thus fulfilling
the objectives of this report.
