PROCESS OF INSTALLLING SOLAR PANELS AT HOME

. Initial Consultation and Site Assessment


Consultation: The process begins with a meeting between the homeowner (or business)
and the solar provider. This is where energy usage, goals, and financial

Site Assessment: The installer performs a detailed site assessment, either in
person or via satellite, to evaluate the roof’s condition, the amount of sunlight
it receives, and the suitability for solar panels. If the roof isn’t ideal, ground-
mounted systems may be considered.
2. System Design and Proposal
Custom Design: Based on the assessment, the solar company will design a solar panel
system tailored to the site’s needs, ensuring maximum energy generation and
efficiency.
Proposal: A proposal is presented, detailing the system’s size, cost, expected
energy savings, and financing options (e.g., cash, loans, Power Purchase
Agreements, or leasing). It may also include available federal or state incentives
like the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC).
3. Permitting
Permit Applications: After approval of the proposal, the solar company submits
necessary paperwork to local authorities for building permits. In Florida, this may
involve specific local zoning, utility interconnection applications, and approvals
for the net metering program.
HOA Approval (if needed): In some communities, a homeowner’s association (HOA) may
need to approve the installation, though Florida law prevents HOAs from outright
prohibiting solar.
4. Equipment Ordering
Ordering Panels and Components: Once permits are secured, the solar company orders
solar panels, inverters, racking systems, and other materials from suppliers. This
may take a few weeks.
5. Installation
Preparation: On the day of installation, the crew sets up safety equipment and
prepares the roof for the racking system.
Mounting and Panel Installation: The racking system is mounted to the roof (or

to the grid.
7. Utility Approval and Interconnection
Net Metering Setup: Once inspections are passed, the utility company approves the
system for connection to the grid. In Florida, net metering allows you to send
excess electricity back to the grid and receive credits on your bill.
Meter Installation: If not already done, the utility may install a special meter
that tracks electricity produced and consumed.
8. System Activation
Turn On: After utility approval, the solar installer will activate the system,
making it operational. You’ll start generating electricity from solar at this
point.
Monitoring Setup: Many systems come with monitoring software, allowing you to track
energy production in real-time via a mobile app or web portal.
9. Post-Installation Support
Warranties: Solar systems usually come with performance warranties (typically 20-25
years for panels) and product warranties for other components.
Maintenance: Solar systems generally require minimal maintenance, but some
companies offer regular check-ups to ensure the system remains efficient.

Federal Solar Tax Credit: You can apply for the 30% federal tax credit when filing
your taxes.
