Description

This article describes the procedure to be followed to boot a node after a power loss or an environmental
shutdown or an error due to env_mgr

Inspect the equipment before powering the system on or making any changes

1. Physically inspect and verify the power issues and environmental issues are resolved.

2. Physically inspect the storage system and shelves for any visible damage.
3. Power-up the shelves first and verify that all disks on the LEDs are clean and is in good health.

• If the controller shutdown is due to high temperature, verify all disks and the LEDs are clean and in good
health.
◦ During a high temperature shutdown, the controller chassis will shut down
◦ However, the disk shelves will continue to run.
• If the system loses power, verify all disk shelves are powered on and all disks are in good health.

Perform the following steps to power on

1. All disk shelves should be fully powered on

2. Log in to the Service Processor or BMC of the target node.

The IP address can be located in the sysconfig -a section of an AutoSupport.

Note: If you are unable to access the SP or BMC remotely over the network, you can connect to the
console port and click Ctrl + G to open the SP prompt.
3. Determine the power status of the node:
SP> system power status

4. If the power is off, run the following command:

SP> system power on

5. Switch to the Data ONTAP console.

SP> system console
Note: It will take a few seconds for the system to POST and start the boot process.

6. The system should autoboot; however, if the option is not enabled, manually boot from the LOADER
prompt
LOADER> boot_ontap

7. If a takeover is performed, the system will eventually move to the 'waiting for giveback' status.
If that occurs, log in to the partner node/cluster and perform a giveback.
Verify the partner is at the waiting for giveback status:

::> failover show

information, see Legal Notices. 2
::> failover giveback -ofnode nodename

8. If there is no takeover, the system will boot fully and go to the Data ONTAP login.
Once logged in to the cluster, run the following command to verify the cluster health:

::> cluster show

::> failover show

Additional Information
• For more information:
◦ AutoSupport message: CHASSIS OVER TEMPERATURE SHUTDOWN
◦ CONTROLLER TAKEOVER COMPLETE AUTOMATIC due to power glitch
• For MetroCluster systems:
◦ For Fabric MetroCluster systems, heal the aggregates before booting the node in step 5: Healing the
configuration in a MetroCluster FC configuration
◦ Boot the node as per step 5 and once the node comes to waiting for switchback status,
perform switchback.
