2 Release Notes
The Release Notes describe the New Product Features introduced in the Touchstone
Firmware for the ARRIS Touchstone Telephony Modem(s) and the Touchstone
Telephony Port(s). Included in the Resolved Product Deficiencies section is a list of
resolved operational considerations noted in previous releases.

2.1 New Product Features

Added in TS5.0.60

Support for @NetHome Monitoring MIB

The TS 5.0.60 release introduces support for the @NetHome-EMTA-MIB-v2.3. These
MIBs are accessible only on the TM402C and the TM502C hardware.

Added in TS5.0.50C
No new features were added in this release.

Added in TS5.0.50B

Support of WTM552
The TS 5.0.50B release introduces support for the new WTM552 wireless hardware
platform. WTM552 provides two lines of telephony service and a wireless router module
with four Ethernet ports and an 802.11B/G wireless access (no USB port).

Added in TS5.0.50

Non-Service Affecting DHCP Operations

Touchstone firmware now provides a feature which can prevent an eMTA IP address
from changing during an active call. This feature has been implemented through the
addition of the arrisCmDevDhcpNoSvcImpact MIB object. Value settings are described
below:

• off(1) – Feature is off by default and DHCP operations adhere to RFC2131

(present operation).
• dontSend(2) – When a line is offhook, DHCP messages from the MTA will be
suppressed and messages from the DHCP server will be ignored until the line
goes onhook or until the IP address lease expires.
• sendIgnore(3) – When a line is offhook, DHCP messages will be sent by the
MTA and messages from the DHCP server will be stored, but not acted on, until
the line goes onhook or until the IP address lease expires.

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 6

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

CAUTION: ARRIS strongly recommends extremely careful consideration be performed

before choosing to implement the setting “sendIgnore(3)”. Use of this option could
potentially lead to IP address duplication and conflicts in the network.

The TS5.0.50 load will default this object setting to “off(1). In addition to the above
MIB, logs have been added to support this feature and are presented in Section 3.4

CM DHCP Request Message Flag Setting Change

Beginning with this firmware release, CM DHCP REQUEST message used to request the
acceptance of a particular DHCP OFFER from a DHCP server will set the broadcast flag
to unicast instead of the broadcast. This change only affects the DHCP REQUEST
message used to respond to a DHCP OFFER message. DHCP REQUEST messages used
to as port of the DHCP RENEW and DHCP REBIND operations are not affected by this
change.

Behavior Change to Clear Cable Modem Reset Command

Beginning with this firmware release, default behavior to the ‘Clear Cable Modem Reset’
command has been changed. The eMTA now treats this command the same way it
handles an SNMP set of docsDevResetNow MIB (i.e., the CM will perform a full re-
initialization). In previous loads, the CM treated this command the same as a T4 timeout.

TLV-39 MIB Implemented to Control Enabling of DOCSIS 2.0

Operation Mode
Beginning with this firmware release, the DOCSIS TLV-39 has been implemented to
control enabling of DOCSIS 2.0 mode of operation. See Appendix A for flow charts that
detail TLV-39 implementation.

Battery Over-Temperature Alarm and Charger Disabling for TM502

TS5.0.50 release includes two new temperature alarms for only the TM502 hardware.
The first alarm allows the customer to set a provisionable threshold that when reached the
EMTA will generate a “Charger Temperature High” alarm notification. Additionally, the
TS5.0.50 release will disconnect the battery and raise a “Charger OverTemp Shutdown”
alarm when a temperature over 90C is detected. This feature is controlled by the MIBs
under arrisMtaDevPwrSupplyControl table. Please refer to Appendix C for the new
MIBs and Appendix D for the CLI information.

Transmission of DHCP Option Code 51 during DHCP Renew

The TS5.0.50 introduces a new feature to allow MSO’s the ability to control if the
EMTA should include the DHCP Option Code 51 in the DHCPREQUEST message
during IP address renewal operation. This feature is controlled by the MIB object
arrisCmDhcpOption51Override in the CM or the MTA configuration file. Please refer to
Appendix C for the new MIB.

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 7

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

Checking for SNMP Entity Changes during DHCP Renew

The TS5.0.50 introduces a new feature to allow MSO’s the ability to control if the
EMTA should strictly enforce that the SNMP Entity Option 122/177 suboption 3
parameter be the same for a DHCP Renew/Rebind response from the DHCP server that it
was in the original DHCP Offer. This feature is controlled by including the MIB object
arrisMtaDevDhcpOptionOverride. Please refer to Appendix C for the new MIB.

Dynamic Equalizer Feature

The TS5.0.50 release introduces the Dynamic Equalizer (DEA) feature (Patent Pending)
for the TM50x hardware models. This feature helps to improve Bit Error Rate
performance and improve initial lock on a downstream signal with large impairments. A
new MIB object has been added to enable operators to turn the DEA feature on or off.
The default value for this feature is on. Please refer to Appendix C for the new MIB.

Downstream Frequency Scanning Enhancements

The TS5.0.50 introduces an enhancement to the Downstream Frequency Scanning
Algorithm for North American DOCSIS customers. The new scanning algorithm will
check for round number frequencies (e.g. 702000000, 601000000, 505000000, etc…)
earlier in the scanning process. This will result in faster installation times for those
customers that are using North American DOCSIS and not utilizing the Standard or HRC
frequency plans but adheres to a round frequency scheme.

New Poland Line Card Template

The TS5.0.50 release introduces a new Poland line card template. This new template can
be selected by setting the ppCfgMtaCountryTemplate MIB parameter to “Poland1010”
(Country Code Value = 30). The linecard template is identical to the Poland template
with the exception of the following items:

• The Tx and Rx loss values are both set to 10 dB.

• HookFlashMin setting is changed to be 70 ms.
• HookFlashMax setting is changed to be 250 ms.

Additionally, all tone definitions for this template are identical to the existing Poland
country code template.

TM502 Hook Detection Hysteresis Changes

The TS5.0.50 release introduces Hysteresis with regards to detecting on-hook and off-
hook conditions. This change reduces the possibility of potential faults causing on-
hook/off-hook oscillations. Note: This addition only applies to the TM502 hardware
models.

New Loop Diag Demo CLI Command

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 8

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

The TS5.0.50 release adds a new CLI command in the “Linecard” menu. The new
command is called ‘lpdemo’ and allows the user to run loop diags when the modem is not
ranged and registered. Please refer to Appendix D for the new CLI command.

New ARRIS Device Parameters MIB

The TS5.0.50 release adds the new MIB arrisMtaDevParameters to provide access to
several pieces of network type data. Please refer to Appendix C for the new MIBs

Retaining Reversed Modem Tone Detection Mode Settings over

Reboots
The TS5.0.50 release contains a change for reversed modem tone detection mode setting
persistence. If the reversed modem tone detection mode is set through SNMP, then this
value will be persistent over reboots.

Updated Line Card State MIB Object

The TS5.0.50 release contains an additional update to the arrisMtaDevLineCardState
MIB object to remove line card states that are no longer supported.
The TS5.0.50 release has updated this MIB object definition as follows:
OOS (0),
IDLE (1),
ADDRESSING (2),
TALKING (3),
FRWD DISC (5),
RINGING (6),
ONHOOK TX (7),
PLO (14)

Added in TS5.0.26

Loop Diagnostics WebGUI Support

Beginning with this firmware release, the Loop Diagnostics feature to remotely
troubleshoot in-house wiring problems may now be invoked from the ARRIS Advanced
Web Page. From this interface the operator has the option of executing diagnostics even
when the phone is off-hook and a voice call is established. Please refer to the
Touchstone Release 5.0 Troubleshooting document for detailed instructions on using this
feature via the WebGUI.

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 9

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

Loop Diagnostics Support for TM502

The Loop Diagnostic Feature is now supported on the TM502 models via SNMP, CLI
and WebGUI interfaces. Please refer to Appendix C for the details on the new MIBs for
initiating Loop Diagnostics via SNMP, and Appendix D for details on CLI commands.

Ability to Suppress FQDN and IP Address in Webpage Event Logs

New functionality has been added to allow the MSO to suppress the printing of FQDN
and IP address information in the event log when viewed via the WebGUI interface. This
feature is controlled by the MIB arrisMtaDevEventHideFQDNandIPAddress. Please
refer to Appendix C for the new MIBs.

Different SIP Proxy per Line

Added functionality to support a different SIP proxy per line for customers that use a
“multi-homed” provisioning setup. This can be accomplished by adding in extra
provisioning information to the sipCfgPortEntry MIB table. Please refer to Appendix C
for the new MIBs.

SIP Feature Customization via Configuration File

Added a new MIB object sipCfgPortFeatureSettings for customization of SIP feature
content via the configuration file at boot time, including the ability to disable CallerID,
Call Waiting, 3WCing, and enable anonymous call rejection. Please refer to Appendix C
for the new MIBs.

Server Lookup Support for SIP Proxy Server Addresses

Touchstone firmware can now support server (SRV) lookup for SIP proxy server
addresses by setting a bit in the SIP feature switch MIB. Please refer to Appendix C for
the new MIBs.

Single-Step MTA Upgrade from NCS to SIP

Touchstone firmware can now support a single-step upgrade when converting from an
NCS network to a SIP network by treating all SIP provisioning methods as “DOCSIS-
only” for all non-SIP loads.

Added in TS5.0.10

Loop Diagnostics
Touchstone Release 5.0 introduces a new feature that enables MSO’s to remotely
troubleshoot in-house wiring problems. This feature is referred to as Loop Diagnostics,
and is supported on the TM402x and TP40x models via SNMP and CLI. Please refer to

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 10

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

Appendix C for the new MIBs for Loop Diagnostics and Appendix D for the CLI
information.

G.729/DTMF Relay Support

Touchstone Release 5.0 includes support for the G.729 codec and DTMF Relay
capability. This includes the ability to revert to the G.711 codec during fax and modem
calls.

Automatic Telnet Session Time-out

Touchstone Release 5.0 introduces a new security and robustness enhancement for telnet
and Secure Shell debugging session that is enabled for an indefinite amount of time, thus
potentially allowing unauthorized access to this interface. TS 5.0 release adds a MSO-
configurable session timeout feature that can be used to automatically disable a telnet or
Secure Shell session. Please refer to Appendix C for the new MIB and Appendix D for
the CLI information.

Webpage Display of Loop Current Mode

Touchstone firmware releases prior to TS 5.0 provided a MIB object which controlled the
setting of the EMTA loop current to either Normal or Boost modes. To determine how
the loop current mode was set, a craftsperson had to have SNMP access to this MIB
object. In TS 5.0, the line card current mode is now available on the “CallP/QoS”
webpage as well as in a new CLI command. Please refer to Appendix D for the CLI
information.

Ability to Obtain Line Card Status via SNMP

Touchstone Release 5.0 adds a new arrisMtaDevLineCard MIB object under
arrisMtaDevMibObjects so that a craftsperson can obtain the line card status of an
EMTA via SNMP. In the previous releases, the line card status was only available via
the webpage and through a CLI command. Please refer to Appendix C for the new MIB.

Periodic Time of Day Re-synchronization

DOCSIS specification requires a device to acquire the time of day from an RFC868-
compliant Time of Day server during initialization. However, there is no requirement to
ever update the time of day with this server after initial registration. Over time, this
could lead to a difference in the time of day value on a device versus the time of day in
the network. TS 5.0 introduces a new feature to allow an MSO to have the ARRIS
EMTA automatically resynchronize this time value. Please refer to Appendix C for the
new MIB and Appendix D for the CLI information.

Release Notes & Letter of Operational Consideration 11

Touchstone Telephony Firmware - Release 5.0.60

Retaining Loop Current Mode Settings over Reboots

Touchstone Release 5.0 contains a change for loop current mode setting persistence. If
the loop current mode is set through SNMP, then this value will be persistent over
reboots.

Querying DHCP Information via SNMP

Touchstone Release 5.0 introduces a new read-only MIB objects that can be queried to
obtain the both CM’s and MTA’s DHCP information. This information was previously
only available through webpages and CLI commands. Please refer to Appendix C for the
new MIBs.

Blocking PacketCable Provisioning When TOD Server Does not

Respond
Touchstone Release 5.0 includes a new feature that allows the MSO to block EMTA
provisioning attempts when a network’s Time of Day server fails to respond. For
networks deploying full PacketCable secure provisioning, this feature can be used to
significantly reduce network congestion caused by recurring EMTA provisioning
failures. By adding a value of 0x200 to the MIB, ppCfgMtaFeatureSwitch, this
functionality will be enabled.

Line Card State Display Changes
