THE NATURE OF

RESEARCH

Research II
Quarter 1: Lesson 1
LEARNING COMPETENCY

The learners should be able to:

❖explain the meaning, characteristics and importance of
research
WHAT IS RESEARCH?

• A process of steps used to collect and analyze information to

increase our understanding of a topic or issue.
• Involves three major steps:
-Pose a question
-Collect data to answer the questions
-Present an answer to the question

Creswell, 2012
WHAT IS RESEARCH?

A systematic approach that involves data

gathering, analyzing and interpretation, in
order to establish facts and reach new
conclusions.

WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH?

• It is worth noting that research is basically a part of life.

WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH?
A tool for building knowledge and
RESEARCH IS… efficient learning

Research provides new/updated

information which allows
individuals to expand their ideas
and knowledge about various
topics.
WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH?
RESEARCH IS… Means to understand various issues

Research gives us a clearer

perspective on why certain
issues are occurring by letting us
know the rationale behind such
issues by providing background
information.
WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH?
An aid to business success and
RESEARCH IS… advertising

Through research, business

owners are able to come up with
new products and keep up with
the latest trends that will help in
their business.
WHY CONDUCT RESEARCH?
A way to verify truths and debunk
RESEARCH IS… myths.

Knowing factual information

through research findings allows
us to verify truths and theories,
and disprove myths about
certain topics.
WHAT SHOULD I RESEARCH ON?
• A research could be about anything…
• Provided that the problem/topic you will research on is SMART.

Focused on a single topic; not too broad SPECIFIC

Involves numeric data & statistics MEASURABLE

can be accomplished at a given time ATTAINABLE

Can yield results & answer questions RESULT-FOCUSED

WHAT SHOULD I RESEARCH ON?
• A research could be about anything…
• Provided that the problem/topic you will research on is SMART.

Must be relevant to current situations TIMELY

CONSIDERATIONS IN RESEARCH:
• Before conducting a research project, a researcher must take
into consideration the following:
• What do I want to research on? (What do I want to find out?)
Research topic

• Who are the ones involved?

Research participants/respondents

• What strategy/design am I going to use for research?

CONSIDERATIONS IN RESEARCH:
• Before conducting a research project, a researcher must take
into consideration the following:
• How am I going to find the necessary data?
Data gathering process

• How I will interpret the data gathered?

Data analysis and interpretation

• How will the results benefit other people?

Significance of the study
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

1. Cyclical: research starts with a problem and ends with a

problem.
2. Empirical: research is based on direct experience or
observation by the researcher.
3. Methodical: research is conducted in a methodical manner
without bias using systematic method and procedures.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

4. Logical: research is based on valid procedures and principles.

5. Analytical: research utilizes proven analytical procedures in
gathering data whether historical, descriptive, and experimental
case study.
6. Replicability: research design and procedures are repeated to
enable the researcher to arrive at valid and conclusive results.
CHARACTERISTICS OF RESEARCH

7. Critical: research exhibits careful and precise judgement.

IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH

The main aim of research is to inform practice, prove a

hypothesis and contribute to the advancement of
expertise in a field or study.
FOR STUDENTS:

▪ Enhances knowledge
▪ Clarifies conclusion
▪ Helps them to have a detailed analysis of everything
▪ To have a proper understanding of the subject
▪ Learn to create a balance between collaborative and
individual work
FOR EDUCATION:

▪ It is a systematic analysis
▪ Leads to great observations
▪ Improving practices
▪ Develops new understanding
▪ Helps in decision making
FOR HUMANKIND:

▪ Helps in knowing the culture

▪ Helps in understanding the society
▪ Knowing the truth
▪ Update technology
▪ For making the right choices for a career
FOR MEDICAL:

▪ Development of new medicine

▪ It provide complementary insights
▪ Development of new procedures and new tools possible
▪ This may provide useful information on pattern and risk factor in
the disease
▪ It offers valuable knowledge on the efficacy of medical care and
its adverse effect.
PERFORMANCE TASK: RESEARCH MIND
MAP
• Objectives: Students will create a mind map that visually represents their
understanding of the meaning, characteristics, and importance of
research.
• Instructions:
1. Introduction to Mind Mapping:
▪ Understand that a mind map is a visual tool used to organize and
represent information.
▪ It starts with a central idea and branches out into related topics and
subtopics.
PERFORMANCE TASK: RESEARCH MIND
MAP
• Instructions:
2. Components of the Mind Map:
❑Central Idea:Write "Research" in the center of your paper or digital
canvas.
❑Main Branches: Draw three branches from the central idea, labeled:
1. Meaning of Research,
2. Characteristics of Research
3. Importance of Research
