b. Is the system memoryless? Justify your answer.
c. Is the system causal? Justify your answer.
d. Is the system time-invariant? Justify your answer.

2. Determine even and odd components of the signal 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝑒 −2𝑡 𝑢(𝑡). Show that the
energy of x(t) is the sum of energies of its odd and even components.

3. The following are the impulse responses of continuous-time LTI systems. Determine
whether each system is causal and /or stable. Justify your answer?

c. h(t) = e−2t u(t + 50)
d. ℎ(𝑡) = 𝑒 2𝑡 𝑢(−1 − 𝑡)
e ℎ(𝑡) = 𝑡𝑒 −𝑡 𝑢(𝑡)

4. Assume the voltage impulse response of a circuit can be modelled by the triangular

a. Use the convolution integral to derive the expressions for the output voltage.
b. Sketch the output voltage over the interval 0 to 15 s.

5. Given ℎ(𝑡) = 4𝑒 −2𝑡 𝑢(𝑡) and 𝑥(𝑡) = 𝛿(𝑡) − 2𝑒 −2𝑡 𝑢(𝑡). Find 𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡) ∗ ℎ(𝑡)
6. In Fig 2, let vs = 2 u(t) V and is = 80 u(t - 0.0002) mA. Find iL(t) for all t.

Fig. 2
7. In Fig 3, S is a two-position switch. It is thrown to position 1 at t = 0. It is kept in that
position for 10 ms and then thrown to position 2. It is kept at the second position until
the current in the inductor goes to zero. At that instant, it is thrown back to position 1.
Then the whole cycle repeats. (i) Calculate and plot two cycles of iL(t). (ii) What is the
frequency of switching in the circuit?

Fig. 3
8. At t = 0− , just before the switch is closed in Fig. 4, vc =100 V. Obtain the expression

Fig. 4
9. Obtain the current i(t), for all values of t, in the circuit of Fig. 5.

Fig. 5
10. The switch S1 in the circuit in Fig. 6 is closed at t = 0 and the switch S2 is closed at t =
0.12 s. Both switches are ideal. (i) Find the current in the inductance as a function of
time and plot it. (ii) Find the voltage across the inductance and plot it. (iii) Find the
voltage across the first resistor and plot it. (iv) What is the time required to attain 90%
of the final steady-state value of current?

transient after the switch is closed at t = 0.

Fig. 9
14. The switch in Fig. 10 was connected to position A for a long time and moves from position

Fig. 10

15. The initial voltage across the capacitor in the circuit in Fig. 11 is –1 V with the polarity

(i) Develop the circuit differential equation using the voltage across capacitor as the
describing variable and identify the natural frequencies of the circuit.
(ii) Find the voltage across the capacitor as a function of time for t ≥ 0+ if the input is

(iii) Develop the circuit differential equation using the source current as the
describing variable, identify the natural frequencies of the circuit and calculate
the initial values needed for solving this differential equation.
