OSCILLATORY MOTION AND

WAVES ASSIGNMENT
Name: .

1. A reference weight of 1.50 N is hung on a spring in order to calibrate it.

The spring stretches a length of 12.5 cm.
a. What is the spring’s constant?

b. How much potential energy is gained by the spring when this mass
is hung from it?

c. What is the mass of an object if it is hung from the same spring and
stretches the spring by a length of 10.0 cm?

d. If this mass is oscillating on the end of the spring, what is the period
and frequency of the oscillation?

e. If the mass is oscillating to a maximum distance of 5.00 cm from

the equilibrium point, what is the velocity of the mass as it crosses
the equilibrium point?

1
2. A weight of 2.50 N is hung at the end of a pendulum with a length of
15.0 cm. The pendulum sweeps out an arc of 60.0º twice in one
oscillation.
a. What is the restoring force of the pendulum at the maximum
height?

b. distance from equilibrium in either direction?

c. What is the period and frequency of the oscillation?

d. How much more gravitational potential energy does the mass have
when it is the maximum distance from equilibrium compared to
when it is at equilibrium?

e. What is the maximum speed reached by the mass as it swings?

2
3. A reference weight of 2.00 N is hung on a spring in order to calibrate it.
The spring stretches a length of 16.0 cm.
a. What is the spring’s constant?

b. How much potential energy is gained by the spring when this mass
is hung from it?

c. What is the mass of an object if it is hung from the same spring and
stretches the spring by a length of 20.0 cm?

d. If this mass is oscillating on the end of the spring, what is the period
and frequency of the oscillation?

e. If the mass is oscillating to a maximum distance of 5.00 cm from

the equilibrium point, what is the velocity of the mass as it crosses
the equilibrium point?

4. A weight of 2.00 N is hung at the end of a pendulum with a length of
16.0 cm. The pendulum sweeps out an arc of 30.0º twice in one
oscillation.
a. What is the restoring force of the pendulum at the maximum
distance from equilibrium in either direction?

b. What is the period and frequency of the oscillation?

c. How much more gravitational potential energy does the mass have
when it is the maximum distance from equilibrium compared to
when it is at equilibrium?

d. What is the maximum speed reached by the mass as it swings?

5. Describe two differences between transverse and longitudinal waves.

4
6. Draw a diagram of a longitudinal wave and label a rarefaction,
compression and wavelength.

7. Red Light has a wavelength of 7.00 x 10-7 m. What is the frequency and
period for a ray of red light?

8. Violet light has a frequency of 7.50 x 1015 Hz. What is the wavelength of
violet light?

9. What is the speed of a wave with a period of 5.00 s and a wavelength of

5.00 m? How does the speed change if the period and wavelength are
doubled? Halved?

5
10. Jena is stranded in the mountains, and is standing next to a calm lake,
and notices the mountains reflected in the surface of the water.
a. Explain this phenomenon and why it does not occur if the lake is
not calm.

b. Jena sees a fish in the water and attempts to spear it with a stick so
that she can have something to eat. Where should Jena aim her
spear? Why?

11. Draw a diagram or series of diagrams that demonstrates constructive

interference.

12. Brandyn is speeding through a playground zone in order to go meet a cute

young lady. A police officer catches him speeding on radar, speeds up to
a velocity of 80 km/h behind Brandyn to catch him and begins to use his
siren to get Brandyn’s attention. Brandyn sees the cop and pulls into an
alley to try and hide from the officer. If the siren has a frequency of 525
Hz, and the speed of sound is 343 m/s what frequency does Brandyn hear
as the officer approaches his hiding spot, and as he passes his hiding
spot?
