SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AND ENGINEERING SCIENCES

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING

CAT 1
BEE 4105: COMMUICATION SYSTEMS 1

DATE: 10TH September, 2024 Time: 1 Hour

Instructions
1. This examination consists of TWO questions.
2. Answer BOTH questions.

QUESTION ONE
a) (i)State two reasons of modulation
(ii) Show that the modulation operation 𝑚(𝑡)𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜔𝑐 𝑡 is a linear operation
(4 marks)
b) Figure 1 shows the circuit diagram of a balanced modulator. The input applied to the top
AM modulator is 𝑚(𝑡) whereas that applied to the lower AM modulator is these two
modulators have the same amplitude sensitivity. Show that the output 𝑠(𝑡) of the balanced
modulator consists of a DSB-SC modulated signal. (6 marks)

QUESTION TWO

a) In spite of the high bandwidth of the FM signal, the first-generation AMPS (American
Mobile Phone Service) was based on FM rather than FM. Explain. (2 marks)

b) An angle modulated signal has the form

𝑢(𝑡) = 100 cos 2𝜋𝑓𝑐 𝑡 + 4 sin 2000𝜋𝑡
where 𝑓𝑐 = 100 𝑀𝐻𝑧
i. determine the average transmitted power
ii. determine the peak phase deviation
iii. determine the peak frequency deviation
iv. Is this FM or PM signal? (8 marks)
c) Figure 2 shows the block diagram of an Armstrong wideband FM transmitter that employs
two stages of frequency multiplication. The message is a sinusoid of frequency 𝑓𝑚 =
15 𝑘𝐻𝑧 and the NBFM signal has carrier frequency 𝑓𝑐1 = 100𝑘𝐻𝑧 kHz and frequency
deviation 𝑓𝑑1 = 750. The required transmission from the power amplifier stage is a
WBFM signal having carrier frequency 𝑓𝑐 = 120 𝑀ℎ𝑧 and frequency deviation 𝑓𝑑 =
75 𝑘𝐻𝑧f . The first frequency multiplication factor is 𝑛1 = 5. Determine:
i. Determine the modulation index at the input and at the output
(4 marks)
ii. The required second frequency multiplication factor n2.
(2 marks)
iii. The required LO frequency f LO.
(2 marks)
iv. The (Carson’s) bandwidth of the FM signal at the output of each processing
block in the transmitter.
