◦ Find the inverse of a 2 x 2 matrix by using the formula
◦ Find the inverse of a square matrix of any size
◦ Solve a system of linear equations by using the inverse of a
matrix
Definition
Invertible matrix
Properties of Invertible Matrices
Finding the Inverse of a 2 x 2 matrix

Note: If A is singular, that is |A| = ad – bc = 0, 𝐴−1 does not exist.

If A is nonsingular, then we have |A| = ad – bc

Finding the Inverse of a square matrix of any size
Let A be a square matrix of order n

1. Write the n x n matrix that consists of the given matrix A on the left and the
n x n identity matrix I on the right to obtain [ A | I ] . This process is called
adjoining matrix I to matrix A.
2. If possible, row reduce A to I using elementary row operation on the entire
matrix [ A | I ] . The result will be the matrix [ I | 𝐴−1 ] . If this is not possible,
then A is noninvertible (or singular)
