Weight and Mass Units in SI and British
Systems
Quantity SI British
Force N (Newtons) lbf (pound-force)
Mass kg (kilogram) lbm (pound mass) or slugs

Definitions and conversions:

1 lbm = 0.454 kg (454 grams)
1 slug = 32.2 lbm
1 N: force required to accelarate a mass of 1 kg at a rate of 1 m/s2
1 lbf: force required to accelarate a mass of 32.2 lbm (1 slug) at a rate of 1 ft/s2
1 lbf = 32.2 lbm*1 ft/s2 (= 1 slug.ft/s2) or 1 lbf = 1 lbm*32.2 ft/s2 (1 g acceleration)
1 N = 1 kg * 1 m/s2 or 1 N = 0.1019 kg * 9.81 m/s2 (1 g acceleration)
1 lbf = 4.457 N

2
Length Units in SI and British Systems
Quantity SI British
Length m (meter) ft (foot)
Length cm (centimeter) in (inch)
Length km (kilometer) nm (nautical mile) or mile (statute mile)

Conversions:
1 m = 3.281 ft
1 in = 2.54 cm
1 ft = 12 in
1 nm = 1852 m
1 nm = 6076.1 ft
1 (statute) mile = 1609.3 m
1 (statute) mile = 5280 ft

3
Velocity Units in SI and British Systems
Quantity SI British
Velocity m/s (meter per second) ft/s (foot per second)
Velocity km/h (kilometer per hour) kt (knot, nautical miles per hour)
or mph (miles per hour)

Conversions:
1 m/s = 3.281 ft/s
1 kt = 1.852 km/h
1 kt = 1.6878 ft/s
1 mph = 1.609 km/h
1 mph = 1.4667 ft/s

4
Temperature Units in SI and British Systems

Quantity SI British
Temperature Kelvin (K) or Centigrade Celcius (oC) Fahrenheit (oF) or Rankine (oR)

Conversions:
K = oC + 273.15
oC = 5/9*(oF+40)-40

oF = 9/5*(oC+40)-40

oR = oF + 459.67

5
Power Units in SI and British Systems

Quantity SI British
Power Watt (W) Horsepower (hp)

Conversions:
1 Watt = 1 N.m/s
1 hp = 550 ft.lb/s
1 hp = 745.7 Watt
1 Watt = 1 N.m/s
1 Watt = 0.73756 ft.lb/s
