Lab Report Instructions

This is what I am looking for in your lab reports: for full credit, please make your work neat, typed,
organized, and include the following:
Please include your name, and names of other students working in your group. Please list your name
first.
The lab report must be printed and turned in as a paper copy. I estimate that your lab report should
be between 3 and 7 pages (including figures).

The report should include the following labeled sections:

 Title (2 points): must describe the lab
 Introduction (5 points): The introduction concisely states the purpose of the lab(s) performed or
the hypothesis(es) tested. It describes the concept being investigated and what are the ideas
behind it. Include historical perspective application of techniques (may require resources to be
cited). It need only be a brief overview of the exercise. It must contain at least one sentence
that clearly states your hypothesis(es). If you performed multiple experiments you may need
multiple hypotheses.
 Materials and methods (5 points): Briefly describe the procedures you performed and the
equipment that you used. Remember that someone should be able to reproduce your results if
they have basic lab skills. (For example: “We used a 1 M solution of NaCl.” You don’t need to
explain putting 111 g of NaCl in water”). It does not have to go through the details of the step-
by-step procedure but does clearly explain how things are done. DO NOT include a list of
materials used in this section. Everything you write in this section, like all the other sections
should be written in complete sentences. This section must also be written using preterit/past
tense voice. It should not be written like it’s a lab manual, recipe, or set of instructions. You
have already completed the experiments with your lab group, and it should be written like, “We
used a 1 M solution of NaCl.” It should not be written like, “Put 1 M NaCl into a beaker.” Also,
because you worked as a group make sure you use “we” instead of “I” when writing. Also, if
you performed multiple experiments, you should organize your Materials and Methods section
to have sub-headings to indicate the experimental protocol for each of these experiments.
 Results (8 points):
o Properly prepared graph showing data points
o Properly prepared table of results
o Label all axes
o Include units
o Include figure and table numbers
o Include your unknown concentration in the graphs/tables
o This section must contain a narrative/description (written paragraphs) describing
your results. Do not only include your graphs and tables in this section. You must
describe the data in your graphs/tables in subsequent paragraphs.
o If you performed multiple experiments, the order that your results are presented should
be the same order that you had your protocols written in the Materials and Methods
section.
 Discussion (10 points): In this section you should discuss and interpret your results and draw
conclusions. This section should open with a robust statement about if your data supported
your hypothesis(es). The discussion should explain the significance and implication of your
data. If a procedure you were performing failed or gave an unexpected outcome, provide
possible explanations.
 References (0 points): If you drew upon resources other than your lab book in writing your
report you should cite them at the end of your report. This section may not be necessary for
your lab report, but if you include information from resources other than your lab manual and
do not cite them you will lose a significant number of points or fail the assignment. This is a
form of plagiarism.

Within each of these sections I will be looking at grammar, clarity of explanation and
presentation, as well as use of scientific terminology. Please be very careful to not use slang
terms, colloquial phrases, or incomplete sentences. Also, if your report is plagiarized
completely or in part the appropriate college policies will be enforced.
