RECAP
Solutions of a System of Linear or First Degree Equations (G8 Lesson )
What does it mean when the coordinates of a point is a solution of a
system of linear equations?
Recall this concept:
The solution of a system of linear equations is the set of ordered pair
that satisfies both equations. This means that substituting these values will
make both equations true.
Let's have a simple example:
Determine if the point ( 2, - 1 ) is a solution of the given linear system
x − 3y = 5
{
2x + 5y = − 1
By substitution, we can verify if ( 2, - 1 ) point satisfies the given
system of equation : x − 3y = 5 2x + 5y = − 1
2-3(-1)=5 2(2)+5(-1)=-1
5 = 5 true -1= -1 true
We can therefore say that the point ( 2, - 1 ) is a solution of the
given system of linear equations
Looking at the graph of the system, we Concept Recall :
can see that the solution ( 2, -1 ) is the point
of intersection of the two linear equations. The graphing method
is one way of determining
the point of intersection as
the solution of the system of
linear equations.
Aside from graphing,
the substitution or
elimination are the two
algebraic methods that can
be used to find the solution
of a system of equation.
LESSON
In today’s lesson, we will start our extension of solving systems of
equations other than that of the linear equations; this time let us talk about
nonlinear equations. As we proceed with this lesson, you may be able to
answer this question : What does it mean when a point of intersection
in your graph is a solution of a given system of nonlinear equations?
First, we need to familiarize ourselves with nonlinear equations. If a
linear equation is in the first degree, then what is the degree of nonlinear
equations ?
DEFINITION :
A system of nonlinear equations consists of two or more equations in
which at least one of them is not a linear equation. They may consist of
equations in second degree or higher.
Below are some examples illustrating this definition, and the possible
graphs of their equations. However, we are going to focus our discussion on
the second degree equations that mostly form graphs of conic sections.
EXAMPLES :
x 2 + y 2 = 16 circle x 2 = 2y + 6 parabola
1) { 3) { 2
x − y = 4 line x = 3y + 7 parabola
x 2 − y 2 = 21 hyperbola x 2 + 2x − y + 1 = 0 parabola
2) { 4) {
x + y = 7 line x + y − 1 = 0 line
METHODS OF DETERMINING THE SOLUTIONS OF SYSTEM
NONLINEAR EQUATIONS
The methods of determining the solutions of system nonlinear
equations are practically the same with that of solving systems of linear
equations. Except that in nonlinear equations, we need to apply a more
complicated algebraic manipulation.
GRAPHING METHOD : To find the points of intersection, the graph
of the two equations are drawn on one Cartesian plane
ALGEBRAIC METHOD : The common solution is sought by
simultaneously solving the two equations using
Substitution
Elimination
Since we are going to focus our discussion on the Graphing Method,
here are the steps that we can follow to determine the solution of a system of
nonlinear equation.
Steps in Using the Graphing Method
Step 1: To find the points of intersection, the graph of the two equations
are drawn on one Cartesian plane.
In graphing the equations, you may use the table of values, x and y
intercept or slope - intercept method. For the nonlinear equations or conic
sections, you may transform the equation to standard form. The standard
form of equation is best for graphing.
Step 2: After graphing the equations, identify the points of intersection as
the solution of the given system. Usually in this kind of system, there could
be more than one solution or points of intersection. Sometimes, there is no
point of intersection.
Step 3: Check if the solutions satisfy the given equations by substituting
the values of the coordinates of the points to both equations.
Example 1:
Let us follow these steps in graphing the given nonlinear system:
x 2 + y 2 = 16
{
x − y = 4
Step 1 : Sketch the
graphs on one
Cartesian plane
Step 2 : Identify the
points of intersection of
the two graphs
Steps 3 : Check for
accuracy
Step 1: Draw the graph that consist of a line ( first degree ) and a circle
which happens to be one of the conic sections.
Step 2: We can see from the graph that the two equations have (4, 0 ) and
( 0, - 4 ) as the points of intersection. These coordinates are the solution of
the given system.
Step 3: To check if the points of intersection is indeed our solutions we
substitute the values of the coordinates to both equations :
Substituting ( 4, 0 ) in x - y = 4 : 4-0=4
4 = 4 true
Substituting ( 0, - 4 ) in x + y = 16 : 02 + 42 = 16
2 2
16 = 16 true
Therefore, the points ( 4, 0 ) and ( 0, - 4 ) are the solutions of the
x 2 + y 2 = 16
system {
x − y = 4
Example 2:
This next example is a system consists of both nonlinear equations.
What type of graphs do you think these equations will represent?
x2 − y = 0
{
x − y2 = 0
First, you may want to change the equations to standard form:
x2 – y = 0 x2 = y
x – y2 = 0 y2 = x
Observed that the standard equations clearly show that
o both graphs have vertices at the origin
o x2 = y is a graph of a parabola that opens upward
o y2 = x is a parabola that opens to the right
The points of intersection is at the
origin ( 0, 0 ) and ( 1, 1 )
The solutions of the given system
of nonlinear equations are the
points ( 0, 0 ) and ( 1, 1 )
ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1 : ACTIVITY 2 :
{
3y = x − 5
{
x 2 + y2 = 5
5y + 1 = − 2x 3x − y = 5
GENERAL DIRECTIONS:
For each of the given activity above, follow the steps in graphing the
systems of equations in two variables.
Determine the solutions of the given systems of equations.
Describe the kind of system ( linear or nonlinear ) for each activity.
Compare the procedures / steps that you have followed in graphing
the system of equations in activity 1 and activity 2
ACTIVITY 3:
DIRECTIONS:
Complete the table of values below and use these to graph the given
x 2 + 2x = y − 1
system of equations: {
2x 2 + 3x + 2 − y = 0
Identify the point of intersection of the two graphs.
Determine the solution of the given system of nonlinear equations.
What will be the solution of a given system of nonlinear equations in
two variables, whose graphs do not intersect?
Show your work here :
y – 1 = x2 + 2x
x 0 1
y 1 0
2x2 + 3x + 2 – y = 0
x -1 0 1
y 4
WRAP-UP
Let us answer our previous question:
What does it mean when a point or points of intersection in your graph is a
solution of a given system of nonlinear equations?
REMEMBER :
The points of intersection on the graphs of the two equations are the
solutions of the system of nonlinear equations.
The coordinates of these points should satisfy both equations. This
means that substituting these values will make both equations true.
If the graph of a system of nonlinear equations in two variables do not
intersect then the system has no solution.
VALUING
In our lesson, you learned how to solve system of equations by
graphing method. The points of intersection on the graphs of the two
equations are the solutions of the system of nonlinear equations in two
variables.
The graphing method is highly dependent on the presentation of your
graphs. If you do not have excellent drawing skills, do not lose confidence.
Feel free to check for the accuracy of your answers using direct substitution.
The worldwide disruption caused by COVID19 pandemic has resulted
to serious everyday problems that need prompt solutions. The internet is
flooded with everyday household problems that seem to have no immediate
solutions and strategies at hand. In your capacity as an educated person,
what solution can you offer to your family and to the community so that
household headaches and community difficulties brought by the new
normal situation be somehow lessen or solved?
