Colonel Sanders, the founder of KFC

Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), was born on September 9, 1890,
in Henryville, Indiana, USA. Raised in a modest family, Sanders faced numerous challenges from a young
age. His father died when he was just six years old, and his mother had to work to support the family,
leaving Sanders to cook and care for his younger siblings.

Sanders had various jobs throughout his life, including working as a farmhand, streetcar conductor,
railroad fireman, and insurance salesman. In 1930, he opened a service station in Corbin, Kentucky,
where he began serving meals to travelers. His cooking quickly became popular, and he soon opened a
restaurant and motel across the street.

In 1940, Sanders perfected his secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, which became the cornerstone of
KFC's famous fried chicken recipe. He received the honorary title of "Colonel" from the Kentucky
Governor in 1936, in recognition of his contributions to the state's cuisine.

Despite the success, Sanders faced financial difficulties in the 1950s when a new interstate highway
reduced customer traffic to his restaurant. At the age of 65, he decided to franchise his fried chicken
recipe. Traveling across the country, he persuaded restaurant owners to add his chicken to their menus,
taking a small fee for each chicken sold.

The first KFC franchise opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952, and the brand grew rapidly. By 1964,
Sanders had over 600 franchises in the United States and Canada. That year, he sold the company for $2
million to a group of investors, but he remained the company's spokesperson and continued to visit KFC
outlets worldwide.
Colonel Sanders became a global icon, known for his white suit and black string tie. He passed away on
December 16, 1980, at the age of 90. Today, KFC is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world, with
thousands of locations in more than 150 countries, a testament to Sanders' enduring legacy in the
culinary world.
