Exercises sheet 01 (Set of real numbers )

Exercise 01: Prove that:

a) 5 ∈ / Q.
√ √
b) 3 2 + 3 is an algebraic number.

Exercise 02: We recall that 2 is an irrational number.
√ √
1) Prove that α = 6 + 4 2 and β = 6 − 4 2 are irrational numbers.

2) Calculate αβ
√ √
3) Prove that α + β is a rational number.

Exercise 03: We recall that [x] is the integer part of x. Prove that:

1. x − 1 < [x] ≤ x.

2. If x ≥ 0 then −x < ([x])2 − x[x] ≤ 0.

3. If x ≤ 0 then 0 ≤ ([x])2 − x[x] < 1 − x.

Exercise 04: Let A and B two nonempty bounded subsets of R.

1) Prove that, if A ⊂ B, then

sup(A) ≤ sup(B) and inf(B) ≤ inf(A)

2) Prove that the subset A ∪ B is bounded and

sup(A ∪ B) = max(sup (A), sup (B)), inf(A ∪ B) = min(inf (A), inf (B))

3) Let A + B = {a + b : a ∈ A, b ∈ B}. Prove that,

sup(A + B) = sup(A) + sup(B)

Exercise 05: Determine the maximum, minimum, supremum and infimim of the following
sets if they exist. Justify (or explain) your answers.

A = − , n ∈ N , B = [0, 1[∩Q, C = [2, 4[∪]0, 1], D = , n∈N

Exercise 06: Let a ∈ R. Prove that

∀ε > 0, ∃ r ∈ Q : |r − a| < ε

Exercise 07: Show that:

1) ∀x ∈ R, |x| = max(x, −x).

2) ∀x, y ∈ R, |x + y| ≤ |x| + |y|.

Exercise 08: Let

A = r ∈ Q : r2 < 2

Show that sup(A) doesn’t exists in Q.

/ Q then r + x ∈
/ Q.

2) If r ∈ Q and x ∈
/ Q then r.x ∈
/ Q.
√ √
3) The number ( 2 + 3) ∈ / Q.

Exercise 11: Prove that ∀x, y ∈ R

1) |x| − |y| ≤ |x + y|

2) |x − y| ≤ |x| + |y|

3) Show that there exists N > 0 such that: x − N < E(x) ≤ x, ∀x ∈ R.
