Sub Title: ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS AND STATISTICS

Basic Statistics II (CO: 4, 5, 6)

1. The first four moments of a distribution about the value 4 of the variable are -1.5,
17, -30 and 108. Find the moments about mean, β1 and β2. Also find the mean of
the distribution.

2. An analysis of monthly wages paid to the workers of two firms A and B

belonging to the same industry gives the following results.

Firm A Firm B
No. of workers 500 600
Average daily wage 186 175
Variance 81 100

(a) Which firm A or B has a larger wage bill?

(b) In which Firm A or B, is there greater variability in individual wages?

3. If n = 10, 𝑋̅= 12, ∑ 𝑥𝑖 2= 1530, then find the coefficient of variation.

4. The arithmetic mean of runs scored by three batsmen A, B and C in the same
series of 10 innings is 50, 48 and 12 respectively. The standard deviations of
their runs are respectively 15, 12 and 2. Who is the most consistent of the three?
If one of the three is to be selected, who will be selected?

5. Coefficient of variation of two series are 75 and 90 and their standard deviations
are 15 and 18 respectively. Find their means.

6. Calculate the Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation between the variables X

and Y. Interpret the answer.
X 39 65 62 90 82 75 25 98 36 78
Y 47 53 58 86 62 68 60 91 51 84

7. Calculate the coefficient of correlation between x and y series from the following
data. Interpret the answer.
X Y
No. of pairs of
15 15
observations
mean 25 18
S.D. 3.01 3.03
Sum of squares of
136 138
deviations from mean
Summation of product deviations of X and Y series from their respectively
arithmetic means = 122.

8. The coefficient of correlation between two variables X and Y is 0.48, the

covariance is 36 and variance of X is 16. Find the standard deviation of Y.
