EXPERIMENT NO

Title: Open Circuit Characteristics(OCC) of a DC Generator & Find the Critical Resistance

Aim: 1. Vary field current to build up armature voltage and plot the OCC of the DC generator
2. Find the Critical Resistance from OCC

Theory: - To determine the open circuit curve experimentally, the field winding of the generator is
disconnected from the machine and instead, is connected in series with an ammeter and rheostat,
and put across a D.C. supply main. Magnetization or saturation curve for a D.C. generator does not
start from zero ordinarily but at some value slightly higher than zero due to “Residual Magnetism”.
For lower values of field ampere turns and therefore saturation curve is a straight line. After that
when the field core begins to become saturated, the curve falls away from the straight line due to
varying permeability of iron.
Generated e.m.f. in a generator is given by an expression :

Volt

Volt

The quantity given in the bracket is a constant. So, Volt.

Since the generated e.m.f. is proportional to flux per pole if speed is constant and field ampere-
turns are proportional to field current. If so, if a curve is drawn between generated e.m.f. on no load
and field current, when the machine is running at a constant speed, then curve so obtained will be
similar to saturation curve. Such curve is known as “Magnetic Characteristics” or “Open-Circuit-
Characteristics (O.C.C)”.
The critical field resistance is defined as the maximum field circuit resistance (for a given speed) with which the shunt
generator would just excite. The shunt generator will build up voltage only if field circuit resistance is less than critical field
resistance.
It is a tangent to the open-circuit characteristics of the generator (at a given speed).

Procedure :
1. Set the prime-mover at rated speed or nearly to the rated speed.
2. Keep the field circuit of the generator to get the initial generated voltage due to its residual magnetism
property.
3. Increase the field current gradually by varying field voltage.
4. Increase the field current until rated armature voltage is developed.
5. Plot curves between field current Vs armature generated voltage.
