COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

CO.1 State the First Law and to define heat, work, thermal efficiency and the difference between
various forms of energy.

Task
Q1. Solar ponds are small artificial lakes of a few meters deep that are used to store solar energy,
as shown in Figure 1. The rise of heated (and thus less dense) water to the surface is prevented
by adding salt at the pond bottom. In a typical salt gradient solar pond, the density of water
increases in the gradient zone, as shown in Figure 1, and the density can be expressed as
𝜋∗𝑧
𝜌 = 𝜌𝑜$1 + 𝑡𝑎𝑛! ( )
4𝐻

where 𝜌𝑜 is the density on the water surface, z is the vertical distance measured downward
from the top of the gradient zone, and H is the thickness of the gradient zone. For H is equal 4
m, 𝜌𝑜 is 1040 kg/m3, and a thickness of 0.8 m for the surface zone, calculate the gage pressure
at the bottom of the gradient zone.

Q2. A large fraction of the thermal energy generated in the engine of a car is rejected to the air by
the radiator through the circulating water. Should the radiator (Figure 2) be analyzed as a closed
system or as an open system? Explain.

Q3. The maximum blood pressure (Figure 3) in the upper arm of a healthy person is about 120 mm
Hg. If a vertical tube open to the atmosphere is connected to the vein in the arm of the person,
determine how high the blood will rise in the tube. Take the density of the blood to be 1050
kg/m3.

Q4. Balloons are often filled with helium gas (Figure 4) because it weighs only about one-seventh of
what air weights under identical conditions. The buoyancy force, which can be expressed as
𝐹" = 𝜌#$% . 𝑔. 𝑣"#&&''( , will push the balloon upward. If the balloon has a diameter of 10 m and
carries two people, 70 kg each, determine the acceleration of the balloon when it is first
released. Assume the density of air is 𝜌 is 1.16 kg/m3, and neglect the weight of the ropes and
the cage.

Q5. Is the state of the air in an isolated room completely specified by the temperature and the
pressure? Explain.
