The study of computers and computing, including both theoretical and algorithmic foundations, the
study of hardware as well as the study of software and how it is used to process information. Computer
Science disciplines include computer and network designs, algorithm studies, data structures and
modeling, artificial intelligence, and information processes. Computer Science uses a mathematical
approach allowing for smooth performance of the operating system.
Computer Science
The study of computing devices and systems is known as computer science. It discusses computer
processes and operations, algorithm performance enhancement and improvement, modern
technologies, and human-computer interaction. We can see that computer science has been fulfilling
strong demands in many different businesses as computer technology plays an increasingly significant
role in every part of modern life.
Careers in Computer Programmer: Data Scientist, or a Front-End Developer are some of the common
job titles that are held by those with a degree in computer science.
Tools: IDE (Integrated Development Environment, VCS (Version Control System), Text Editors, Package
Manager, Build Tools, Testing Framework,.
Information Systems
Information systems is about creating, sharing, and distribution of information that is generated by
computers and their users of information technology designs, implements, and maintains the support of
that data. Information Systems jobs that are in the information technology include data analyst,
information security analyst and computer systems analyst. Tools that are most applicable for these jobs
are project management software, inventory and asset management software, vulnerability
management software, and help desk software.
Roles & Careers: Systems Analyst, Information Systems Manager, Software Support.2.
Computer Engineering
Computer engineering is
a branch of engineering
that integrates several
fields of computer
science and electronic
engineering required to
develop computer
hardware and software.
Computer engineers
usually have training in
electronic
engineering (or electrical
engineering), software
design, and hardware-
software
integration instead of
only software
engineering or electronic
engineering. Computer
engineers are involved in
many hardware and
software aspects of
computing, from the
Computer Engineer design, develop and build technologies and network infrastructure. They further
test and analyze the hardware related technologies including but not limited to circuit boards,
networking devices, motherboard. They also update those technologies based on their findings.
Roles and Careers: Application Developers, Game Developers, Cyber Security Analyst, Computer
Technician.
Tools and Technologies: IDE’S, Veracode’s, Code Editor tools, CASE tools
Information Technology
The use of hardware, software, services, and supporting information infrastructure to manage and
deliver information using voice, data, and video. This discipline is closely related to information systems
because they both collect and deliver data and information. A job or career that relates to information
technology is an information technology consultant.
Roles and responsibilities: Install and configure software and hardware, manage network servers and
technological tools, configure accounts, manage users and policies for work teams, monitor
performance and maintain systems, Ensure security through access controls,
Tools used: Wireshark, Vulnerability scanner and software, Document management software,
Performance monitor tool. Cable crimper, tester, stripper.
Programming and scripts: Programming is the set or combination of instructions to design and build an
executable computer program to achieve a specific computing result. The programming is composed of
the analysis, the generation of algorithms, the generation of profiles of the precision and resource
consumption of the algorithms, and the implementation of algorithms in a chosen programming
language.
An IT professional would use scripts in her work to automate tasks like deleting, copying, and managing
files. While programming the IT professional would use it in their work to test the functionality of the
program, write a specific program for a user or update or modify designs provided by software
developers and engineers.
Careers of Interest
Roles & Responsibilities: Install/configure hardware components, repair or replace damaged or faulty
hardware, upgrade systems.
Tools used: Cable Tester, Tone generator and probe, Wireshark, Cable crimpers and strippers, loopback
plug, Wi-Fi Analyzer, Power Supply tester.
Roles & Responsibilities: Collaborate with Network Architects to optimize network, work with backbone
Engineer to deploy network solutions, scheduling network upgrades.
Tools used: Spiceworks, Pulseway, Portable Cable Tester, RMM (Remote Management and Monitoring)
application, LucidChart.
Training & Certifications: CCNA, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security Plus, Bachelor’s in CS/IT.
Roles & Responsibilities: Design, develop network topologies and oversee and test penetration for
security.
Tools used: Lucid Chart, Remote Management software, Cable Tester, Pulse-way, Spiceworks.
Training & Certifications: CCNA, CompTIA A+, Network+, Security Plus, Bachelor’s or Master’s in CS/IT.
