Beetles (Coleoptera) of Peru: A Survey of the Families.

Chrysomelidae: Eumolpinae Hope, 1840
CAROLINE S. CHABOO1,3 AND R. WILLS FLOWERS2
Diversity in Peru: Six tribes, 49 genera, 224 species.
Recognition: Eumolpinae are generally robust beetles with filiform or subclavate
antennae, with their insertions separated by the entire width of the frons.
Eumolpines are often smooth and shiny, with dark and/or attractive metallic colors.
In some genera (e.g., Myochrous, Habrophora) the body is covered with hairs or
scales. Eumolpinae can be distinguished from other Chrysomelidae by the following
combination of characters: labrum undivided; antennal insertions separate by the
entire width of the frons; the pronotum lacks a transverse constriction; wing veins
not reduced; lack of apical spurs on all tibiae; middle abdominal segments not
narrowed; and the endophallus is longer than the median lobe and lies under the
basal hood of the aedeagus when retracted.
Habitat: Adult Eumolpinae are frequently encountered in secondary forests and
clearings, usually sitting on leaves. They readily take flight at any disturbance. Some
(e.g., Phanaeta) are excellent jumpers although they lack modified femora such as
found in the Alticini. Eumolpinae generally feed on tender parts of plants, such as
young leaves and shoots, or on pollen and flower petals. Smaller species (less than 1
cm) eat small holes in leaves while large species eat C-shaped holes in leaves. In
Costa Rica, preferred food plants are Melastomataceae, Solanaceae, and Rubiaceae.
Eumolpine larvae are subterranean and feed on roots. Nothing is known of the
biology of most larvae, but in a few instances where life history studies have been
done, larvae do not feed on the same plant families as the adults.
In Peru, various pests include some species of Allocolaspis and Colaspis on
bananas; Colaspis chlorites (Erichson) on potatoes (Alcázar and Raymundo, 1985);
Colaspis lebasi Lefèvre on beans (e.g., Vigna, Phaseolus) (Westerduijn, pers. comm.);
and Lepronota peruana Lefèvre on camu-camu fruit trees (Myrtaceae: Myrciaria
dubia (Kunth) McVaugh; Couturier et al., 1996). Given the pest status of several
eumolpine species in Andean countries, we should expect to find more eumolpines as
pest of various crops in Peru.
Notes: The following list of species is based on Bechyné’s (1953) catalog and
references therein, supplemented by subsequent papers (Bechyné, 1955, 1957, 1958,1997;
Bechyné and Bechyné, 1961, 1968, 1969; Bowditch, 1921) dealing in part with
Eumolpinae. Many species are known only from their record in Peru, however South
America has been poorly sampled for eumolpines, so it is unclear which ones may be
true endemics or are precinctive. Bechyné (1953) has been the only ‘preliminary’ list of
eumolpines (37 genera, 147 species) for the Neotropical region. A modern list of
Peruvian Eumolpinae is long overdue. We anticipate many new additions to Peru’s
