Bibi Module 7 Assignment
Bibi Module 7 Assignment
Care Planning/Restorative
General Directions:
A. Take Home Assignment.
B. The assignment will count for 40% of your final mark in Module 7.
C. A minimum mark of 21 out of 30 (70%) must be achieved to pass.
I would enquire about the location of where Mrs. Gregg lived (close to stores, and hospitals,
appointments etc.). I would want to know the layout of the house and if there were any safety
concerns that should be addressed to avoid anything happening to Mrs. Gregg when she is by herself.
I would also want to know if she had any devices to help with her speech or mobility such as an IPAD
or a notebook to write things down on for the support worker or a walker/wheelchair to get around
the house. It would also be important to note any physical changes happening to Mrs. Gregg, such
as, any pressure sores currently developing.
2. List the types of information that you would expect to obtain from the care plan. (2 marks)
From the care plan, I would hope to find her diagnose(s), her treatment plan (regaining mobility and
speech, independence and preventing any damage to the skin should be listed in this section), any
orders that would be from doctors or nurses and the plan of what type of care is going to be provided,
for how long, and by who. Also, the diet that she should be using and any appointment that would be
in future. It should also contain the outcomes that are to be achieved by the support worker and the
client
3. In the following problem, explain briefly the feeling expressed by the client and the actions
for the Personal Support Worker to take (2 marks each).
Situation 1
Mrs. Gregg continually uses her knife to eat with and is generally unable to choose the
correct utensil and unable to cut her meat. She has difficulty getting food to her
mouth. She resists help. One day she threw her plate across the room.
Client’s Feelings
Mrs. Gregg feels angry, upset and frustrated that she is not able to get the food in her mouth and she
may be confused when PSW try and help her as she thinks she has the correct utensil in her hand to
make eating the meal easier and more efficient. Since, prior to her illness she was independent, she
would still believe she can do regular stuff.
The PSW physical actions would be to not allow a knife to be at the table setting. The PSW should
take away any sharp utensils or cutlery out of the reach from Mrs. Gregg so as not to injure herself.
The PSW would also help clean up the mess from the plate that was thrown across the room so that
Mrs. Gregg does not endanger herself when she is by herself.
Emotional help by the PSW would be to listen to why Mrs. Gregg is angry, understand and make
suggestions on how Mrs. Gregg could still be independent but in a safer manner. Her safety is the
most important but Mrs. Greg should also feel like she is being understood, not judged and
encouraged rather than not allowing her to complete these tasks on her own. Show empathy to the
client.

Situation 2
Mrs. Gregg has expressed a desire to read, but she is unable to understand the text in
her old books. She asks you to help her practice words. She says that she has trouble
passing the time and that she expects to return to work in several weeks.
Client’s Feelings
Mrs. Gregg most likely is feeling hopeless and upset that she has a desire to complete something she
is interested in but is unable to complete that by herself. Mrs. Gregg might also feel embarrassment
because she has to ask her PSW for some assistance with something that she used to be able to do
without any help
PSW Actions (physical and emotional help)
The PSW would help Mrs. Green practice the words she would not be able to understand or read on
her own. The support worker should support the client when the client needs it the most.
Emotional help would include listening to Mrs. Gregg but also trying to sympathize as to why she
would feel the way she does. It can also include the encouragement to Mrs. Gregg that she is able to
do this, the reassurance that you as the PSW is there if the help is needed and of course the
compassion that you truly care to help, is also very important. If the policy of the company and the
client allow it, show empathy and give encouragement pleasantly
Situation 3
One day when you approach Mrs. Gregg, she is crying and says she doesn’t want to
get up. She says, “None of this should have happened to me. What did I do to deserve
this?”
Client’s Feelings
The client is sad, upset, angry, and frustrated that she has to go through what she is going through.
Mrs. Gregg would have gone through a lot with her husband passing away and having adult children
who might require help from time to time from their mom. They might also need help with the
grandchildren, so Mrs. Gregg would feel like she not does not time to herself to do the things she
enjoys to do and be able to do those things without support from anyone else. Mrs. Gregg would feel
emotional due to not understanding why all the bad things have happened to her and how she
doesn’t deserve to go through something like this.
The PSW would physically help Mrs. Gregg with whatever she wanted but also taking a step back to
understand that Mrs. Gregg is upset that she wishes she could do this on her own. The PSW could
physically help clean her up (wash her face, give her a hug, expressing communication by touch and
showing that you care and are there. The emotional help is listening, taking that step back and
understanding how this would make Mrs. Gregg feel. Mrs. Gregg would have a lot of different
emotions and may feel like this from time to time, so as the PSW or support worker, it is our job to
listen to the client and showing that you care but to also help them wherever they might not be able
to do it on their own. It would be important to remember that Mrs. Gregg is still a person with feeling
Situation 4
Mrs. Gregg insists on getting up by herself and moving independently from her chair to
the bathroom. She uses a walker. Occasionally she falls. She is a private person and
does not want you to attend her in the bathroom.
Client’s Feelings
The client may feel like she is not able to be independent. She insists on getting up on her own
because she doesn’t want the help as she wants her independence as much as possible. She also
might feel embarrassed that she needs to ask for the help but also may get physically nervous to have
to go in front of someone, that she may not be able to use the bathroom. She may want to have her
privacy but it also may because she wants to keep as much as her independence as she can
The PSW would support Mrs. Gregg and encourage her to use her walker. The PSW could say that it is
for the safety for herself and it could be dangerous if she has a fall. The PSW could offer to stand
outside the bathroom door or leave the door open a crack while standing in a room near the
bathroom. The PSW should encourage that if Mrs. Gregg wants to be in the bathroom by herself, the
PSW should stand outside the door in case anything happens and help can be immediate.
Emotionally, the PSW would listen and try to understand why Mrs. Gregg wants to be more
independent but explain to Mrs. Gregg in a soft tone that it’s for the safety of everyone involve
4. Using all of the above information, describe how the following factors might affect Mrs.
Gregg’s relearning of speech and mobility. Use case study information to help answer
questions. (3 marks)
a. Age
Mrs. Gregg’s age might affect this as it is harder to re-learn mobility and speech the older a client is.
It is more difficult to retain new information the older someone is. Itis also harder to stabilize balance
and mobility has the body generally decreases as the person begins to age.
Mrs. Gregg’s personality might affect her with the re-learning of her speech and her mobility because
she wants to be independent, she doesn’t understand why this happened to her and she wants to
complete most of her care on her own. She may be limited on what she is able to do but with her
personality, she might not accept that right away and try to retain her dignity by doing all her care by
herself
c. Environment
Mrs. Gregg’s environment might affect her relearning her speech and regaining her mobility because
she may not have the space in the house to complete this task to 100%. She may need help getting up
or down the stairs, walking down the hallways with her walker and getting in and out of different
rooms with the way the house is designed and developed. She may not have the equipment in her
environment to help her with her speech (a talking device, etc.) and she may not have enough support
when the PSW is not there to help her with these tasks
5. Describe five (5) ways in which the PSW can promote Mrs. Gregg’s self-esteem and
6. Define Restorative Care and what role it would play in helping with Mrs. Greg’s
rehabilitation. How could the PSW assist with this process? (2 marks)
Restorative care is the where the PSW/support worker is focused on helping the clients regain their
independence to their fullest extent possible and to be able to improve the quality of the client’s life.
Restorative care plays a huge role in helping Mrs. Gregg rehabilitation. It helps with the level of Mrs.
Gregg’s functioning and what she is able to do on her own and what she needs help with. It can help
Mrs. Gregg slow down and complete her tasks with more ease. The PSW could assist with this
process by helping Mrs. Gregg to carry out her daily living activities, motivating and supporting her by
showing her encouragement, respecting her and the goals she may have, as well as allowing her as
much independence as possible and following the care plan.
