EMMA HARRIS
Murder at Moorbourne Manor

Why You’re Here?

You’re at Moorbourne Manor, a sprawling mansion on the edge of
Dartmoor, where Lord Victor Moorbourne has invited guests to hear a
personal reading of his last will and testament. It’s the 30th November
1899 and Lord Moorbourne doesn’t expect to see the turn of the
century. Possibly due to his ailing health, his lordship has developed a
conscience and wishes to right the wrongs of his past.

Following his reading, Lord Moorbourne invited you and the rest of the
guests to stay on at the mansion to enjoy the generous food and drink
that he had provided. He then retired to his study.

However, just as the party was coming to an end, the evening took
a gruesome turn- Lord Moorbourne’s temporary maid, Violet Smith,
discovered his murdered body slumped across his desk! She let out a
scream that must’ve reached the four corners of Dartmoor.

Devon & Cornwall Police were contacted, and Detective Leslie

Hughes arrived on the scene.

What Now?
You and the other guests are required to assemble in the grand reception
room to hear Detective Hughes speak. Hurry along there, but don’t say
too much! Just listen. Be under no illusion – YOU are a suspect too!

ROUND 1
INTRODUCTIONS
Use this page to help introduce your character to Detective Leslie Hughes
when asked. Be careful not to overshare!

Your Background
You’re Emma Harris, Lord Victor Moorbourne’s sister.

Growing up in the shadow of your brother felt like being in a protected

bubble, life was easy, and you knew that he’d look after you forever if
necessary. When he suggested that his friend Douglas Harris wanted to
court you, you knew something was amiss. Douglas would never have
asked Victor for his permission to court you- he wouldn’t have insulted his
friend in this manner. Douglas admitted the reason for your courtship on
your first outing and, far from upsetting you, it made you like him more.
You’d found a man who trusted you, shared with you, and was willing to
build a future with you. With a little help from Victor’s money, of course.

As The Harris Shipping Company started to grow, you and Douglas had
a few arguments. He seemed to believe that your tastes were far too
expensive and were throwing the company into jeopardy. You scoffed at
his claims and helped him ensure that the company excelled far beyond
his expectations. Since then, you’ve wanted for nothing. Douglas doesn’t
like you helping around the home; he’s hired a parade of maids over the
years to tend to your every need. Your latest maid is a beautiful young lady
named Violet Smith.

When you fell pregnant you were elated! Then Douglas started to complain,
once again, about money. He claimed that your plans for the unborn baby
outweighed the finances that you both had. As a result, you grew to loathe
your pregnancy and couldn’t wait for it to be over. When the baby was
born with abnormal legs and problems that would plague the poor thing for
life, you didn’t want the child. You gave baby Sam to Victor’s wife who’d

7
grown attached to the child when you could not. Of course, Victor paid you
and The Harris Shipping Company received the financial injection that it
needed to become bigger and better.

Your second pregnancy was more straight-forward. With the money the
business was making, you could afford to match the upbringing of Victor’s
children. And as your only child, Sidney grew up in a life of luxury. Some
might say he enjoyed an even more luxurious lifestyle than his cousins at
Moorbourne Manor on account of him being an only child. When Victor’s
wife died, he tried to give Sam back. You refused.

Sidney is fully grown now and, despite his wandering eye, is married and
settling down. Unfortunately, The Harris Shipping Company is, once again,
running at a loss. With your husband Douglas, you must do something to
make your company profitable before handing the reins to Sidney.

It seems that when the business struggles, so does your marriage. That’s
why you initially refused to attend Moorbourne Manor tonight, claiming
to be sick. When two disgruntled employees turned up at your home and
managed to get you to disclose Douglas’ whereabouts, you had to travel to
Moorbourne Manor to warn him.

Your Introduction
When asked, use this statement to introduce your character.

“I’m Emma Harris, Victor’s… sorry, Lord Moorbourne’s sister. I am incredibly

upset, and I will try and help as much as I can, but please can we all stick to
the facts and not drag my good brother’s name through the mud. I know he
had his… eh, faults, but he did not deserve this. Let’s make someone pay!”

DETECTIVE HUGHES WILL NOW ASK YOU WHO YOU ARE.

ROUND 2
MINGLING

Detective Hughes has provided some invaluable initial insights into the
gruesome crime that has unfolded here tonight at Moorbourne Manor.
Read more about yourself below before getting to know the other guests a
little better. The aim of this round is to uncover information about the other
guests that may link them back to the insights that Detective Hughes has
given you.

Your Secrets
Keep these to yourself!

• You gifted a letter opener to your brother, but not before having it
sharpened by Wally the gardener. One of the last things your brother
said to you was, “That flaming thing will take my finger off if I’m not
careful!”

• You aren’t really sick, you tried to use illness as an excuse to get out
of tonight’s gathering. You were hoping Douglas would attend alone
and return home with news of a massive inheritance that would not
only save The Harris Shipping Company but also your marriage.

9
Possible Conversation Starters
Use these in any order. The aim here is to further understand the other
guests.

If you’re asked a question, use what you know from your character
biography to answer- carefully!

• Suggest that the evening was destined to end in disaster. With so

many vultures and one dying man, how could it not?

• Say: “Should we raise a toast to my brother before we start? It seems

only fitting!” Raise your glass and say: “To Victor Moorbourne, our
loss is God’s gain!”

When you feel like you’ve thoroughly mingled with the other guests, or
your host tells you to, move on and work through Round 2a – Rumours.

INNOCENT OR GUILTY?

Your host will now ask you to take part in a random draw to find out if you
are innocent or guilty.

Please keep your status to yourself!

In the following two rounds, you will be interrogated by the other guests
as each tries to establish who the murderer is. Answers to their questions
are listed under two categories: “If You’re Guilty” and “If You’re Innocent”
– you should use the answers that correspond to the status that you have
just randomly drawn.

You will also interrogate the others as you aim to solve the murder (or
lead people astray if you are indeed the killer). Questions are listed in
dialogue format and are appropriate to your character- time to embrace
your character and showcase your acting talents!

murder by casting doubt on the innocence of others. The overall question

THE SOLUTION
Based on your innocent or guilty status, read your alibi or confession aloud
when asked to by your host.

ALIBI (IF INNOCENT)

I’m innocent!

I am! What sort of animal kills their own brother? I loved that man dearly,
and he loved me.

Yes, my husband and I need money, but we wouldn’t set out to kill for it –
family or otherwise.

Now excuse me, I must take my leave and mourn my brother!

CONFESSION (IF GUILTY)

I fear you may have a scandal on your hands, Detective Hughes. Yes, I
did it.

What do you think – the first female murderer in Dartmoor? Certainly, the
first in my social class.

I loved my brother and yes, I was upset at being excluded from his wealth in
the way that I was- but to be honest, we’d discussed it before this evening.

We’d make a pact. Once he’d made his speech, I was to attend his study
and help him end his life, he was suffering, you see? So, I did, and I have
no regrets. My brother’s wishes were fulfilled. He said that I should kill him
without warning and that too I successfully did. He did not feel a thing.

Take me away, Detective Hughes, but know this – I killed my brother based
on his own wishes and that shall be my defence in court. My contacts will
see to it that all charges are dropped, and I am released.
