APPLIED MATHEMATICS FOR S.6

SECTION A

Attempt all questions in this section

DURATION : 2 HOURS

1. The table below shows the values of x and the corresponding values of a function f(x)
𝑥 0.3 0.6 0.9 1.2
𝑓(𝑥) 3.00 3.22 3.69 4.06
Use linear interpolation to find;
a) 𝑓(𝑥) 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥 = 0.4
b) 𝑥 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑓(𝑥) = 3.8
2. The table below shows the cost of ingredients used for making Chapats for two different
birthday parties for 2015 and 2017.

Ingredients Cost

2015 2017

Salt 200 350

Baking flour 3800 4600

Cooking oil 1500 1800

By taking 2015 as a base year, calculate the price relative for each ingredient and hence,
obtain the average index number.

Judge I 63 65 55 63 63 55 60 58

1
Judge II 77 70 60 75 68 58 54 68

(a) Calculate the rank correlation coefficient between the two judges.

(b) Comment on the relationship between the two judges at 5% level of

significance.

5. For every 20 glasses produced by a machine, 11 are non-defective. If a random sample

of 15 glasses are selected, find the probability that;

(i) exactly 8 glasses are defective

(ii) at most 7 glasses are defective.

6. A random sample of 100 adults is taken from a population. At sample is found to

have a mean weight of 76.0 and variance of 144.0. find the 97% confidence limits for
the mean of the population
