YEAR OF PUBLICATION: 2023
II. SUMMARY

The cross-sectional study analyzed 14,462 pediatric consults in a rural Philippine primary care facility from April
2019 to March 2021. Most patients were 1-4 years old, with an almost equal gender distribution. Cough, fever,
and colds were the top complaints. Respiratory tract infections were the most common diagnoses, followed by
skin and soft tissue infections. Consults declined in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings
underscored the need for infectious disease prevention programs and highlighted the role of electronic medical
records in epidemiological research for better healthcare planning.
III. NURSING IMPLICATIONS

A. To Nursing Practice

The study impacts nursing practice by enhancing skills in pediatric care, infectious disease management, and
epidemiological surveillance. It reinforces competencies in assessing and managing common childhood illnesses,
emphasizing preventive measures to curb infections. Additionally, it underscores the importance of utilizing
electronic medical records for efficient patient care and epidemiological research. Literature supports this,
highlighting the pivotal role of nurses in disease prevention and health promotion, especially in community
settings (Holland et al., 2020). Overall, the study contributes to elevating nursing practice standards by promoting
evidence-based care and proactive disease management.

B. To Nursing Education

The journal addresses key knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) essential for nursing education, such as
pediatric assessment, infection control, and health informatics. These are directly relevant to nursing curricula,
ensuring students acquire competencies needed for pediatric nursing practice and responding to infectious disease
outbreaks. For my client, it enhances their ability to provide evidence-based care and adapt to evolving healthcare
challenges. In healthcare, these KSAs empower nurses to effectively prevent and manage pediatric infections,
aligning with the profession's core responsibilities (Rodrigues et al., 2020). As a student nurse, understanding
these concepts prepares me for clinical practice and fosters a commitment to lifelong learning.

C. To Nursing Research

The journal's scope includes pediatric nursing, infection control, and health informatics, providing valuable
insights into these areas. However, limitations may exist regarding the depth of coverage or specific populations
studied. To contribute to nursing knowledge and research, the journal could broaden its scope to include diverse
patient demographics and explore emerging healthcare technologies. Research avenues could include
investigating the impact of telehealth on pediatric care delivery or exploring cultural influences on infection
prevention practices. By addressing these areas, the journal can enhance its relevance and contribute to
advancing nursing science (Sweeney et al., 2021).

IV. I partially agree with the journal's content. While it provides valuable insights into certain aspects of
nursing, such as pediatric care and infection control, it may lack comprehensive coverage in other areas.
Additionally, its focus on health informatics presents opportunities for exploring the integration of
technology in nursing practice. However, there's room for improvement in addressing diverse patient
populations and emerging healthcare challenges. Overall, while the journal offers valuable contributions, it
could enhance its impact by broadening its scope and depth of coverage to better meet the evolving needs of
nursing professionals and patients.
