Triangle Proportionality

English Learner Instructional Strategy

Vocabulary Support: Draw Visual Examples
Draw a large triangle on a poster board, and ask students to identify the line segments. Label
the triangle with the vocabulary term segment for each side. Next, ask students to identify
the midpoint of each segment, and label those points with the term midpoint. Show students
where the midsegments are located, and label these as well. Finally, label the angles of the
triangle. The end result should be a triangle that students can easily reference to identify the
location and meaning of relevant vocabulary.

Collect and Display

As students discuss the questions, write key words and phrases you hear, such as vertical,
converging, vanishing point, and proportional. Display the words and phrases for student
reference throughout the lesson. Update the collection with new understandings as the
lesson progresses.

What is the proportionality theorem of triangles?

If a line intersects two sides of a triangle and is parallel to the third side, it
