Similar Polygons

English Learner Instructional Strategy

Vocabulary Support: Signal Words
Similes can have structures, such as…as (adjective) as…or…is like a…, that mimic similarity
transformations, implying similar, but not exact meanings. Post several adjectives, such as
hard, soft, black, and white, as well as a few names of animals on the board. Have students
brainstorm additional nouns and action verbs from which to practice writing similes.

Discussion Supports
As students talk about the questions, have them pay attention to each other's understandings
in order to increase their fluency in mathematical discussions about dilations and similarity in
polygons. Restate statements they make as a question to seek clarification and provide
vocabulary or grammar prompts for students who need more guidance.

Multicultural Teacher Tip

Pair students and ask them to find at least three things they have in common
with one another. Provide verbal or written prompts as needed, such as hair
color, birthday month, or number of siblings. Have students record their
partner’s name and the similarities they share, then switch partners to find
more commonalities. Create a visual showing how all students in the class
have something in common with each other, and post in the room.
