Pictures, videos, activity sheet, chart powerpointpresentation

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reviewing previous lessons or presenting the new lesson
The teacher will use pictures on different kinds of friction.

Match Me Game: The teacher will call a pupil to perform the game. Tell
whether the following pictures show Fluid, Static, Rolling and Sliding Friction.
B. Establishing a purpose for the Lesson
Supposed you are opening a soda’s lid, what do you think are you using to
open it?
Did you increase your force?
What made u open the lid?

C. Presenting examples/ instances of the lesson

Activity 1
Friction, to the Rescue

Problem: What are the effects of friction?

Materials: plain white paper, ballpen, sandpaper

Procedure:
1. Get a ballpen and a paper.
2. Write something on the paper.
3. This time get a sandpaper and a ballpen. Write something on it.
4. Record your observation.
 What have you noticed when you glide the ballpen to the paper? To
the sandpaper?
 Describe the motion of the ballpen.
 What can you infer about the motion of the ballpen? Why do you
think this happen?

Activity 2

Problem: What are effects of friction if?

Materials: matchbox and match sticks

Procedure:

1. Get a matchbox and a match sticks.

2. Scratch the match sticks to the matchbox.
3. Notice the surface of the matchbox.
4. Record your observation.
 Describe the surface of the matchbox and the match sticks’ head.
 What is produced when you scratch the match sticks to the
matchbox?
 Why do you think this happen?

Activity 3

Problem: What are the effects of friction if?

Materials: rubber shoes, basketball

Procedure:

1. Look for a wooden basketball court.

2. Wear your rubber shoes.
3. Listen to the rules the teacher will tell you.
4. Start to dribble and to run in the court.
5. Use both sides of the court to have a 1 minute play.
6. Record your data.
 What did you notice to the basketball court?
 How did your rubber shoes help you to run in the court?
 What if you used shoes without spikes, do you think you can play
and run well in the basketball court? Why?
 What is the relationship of the surface of the wooden floor to the
rubber shoes?

D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 1

Group Reporting/ Presentation of the Output
Sharing of Results
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 2
Answer these questions:

What are the good/ desirable effects of friction

Are these effects helpful to the everyday life? Why?
Give some instances of good effects of friction.
What are the undesirable effects of friction?
What makes them undesirable?
Give some examples showing the bad effects of friction?

F. Developing mastery

Direction: Complete the sentence below.

1. Without friction, the world will be ______________________________.

2. Rough surface has ________________________________, while smooth
surface has lesser friction.
3. Friction is very significant because
_________________________________.
4. It is advisable to use rubber shoes in playing basketball to
________________________________.
5. By using lubricants, friction will be
________________________________.

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Suppose you are having a trekking together with your friends, how will
friction
help you to reach the peak?

H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

What are the good effects of friction? bad effects of friction?

Background information for the Teacher

Good Effects of Friction

1. Friction allows us to grip things.
2. Friction helps people convert one form of motion into another.
3. Friction converts some energy to heat.
4. Friction can stop motion.
5. Friction also helps keep the wheels of a car on the road and stop the car
when
brakes are applied.

Bad Effects of Friction

1. Friction makes objects difficult to move continuously.

2. Friction converts some energy to heat, noise, and wear and tear on materials.

Additional Information:

 Surfaces with little friction: wet or icy roads, wax on surfboards, smooth
shoes
 With too much friction- things don’t work very well (such as moving parts
in bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, door locks and gate hinges)

I. Evaluating Learning
Direction: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. Motion over a surface will cause least friction on the

b. Bottom of a new snicker
c. Grooved surface of a car tire
d. Wet surface of a soap car
2. How can you best reduce friction between the bottom or feet and the
floor?
a. By smoothing the floor
b. By keeping furniture on their place
c. By applying lubricants like wax on the floor
d. By putting wheels or rollers on the bottom or feet of furniture.

3. Which shows that friction is undesirable?

a. Pushing furniture
b. Lighting a matchstick
c. Walking on a wet floors
d. Using the breaks when approaching a stoplight
4.How will you reduce friction?
a. By using lubricants
b. By using rug
c. By using paper
d. By using wood
5.A basketball player uses rubber shoes in playing in the basketball
court. How do therubber shoes help the player not to slip during the play?
a. The rubber shoes have the tiny bumps that grip to the floor and
Increasethefriction.
b. The rubber shoes have the special sole.
c. The rubber shoes have the gravity that hold on the floor.
d. The rubber shoes have holes in the sole.

J. Additional activities for the application or remediation.

Reinforcement
Enumerate five ways how useful friction is.

Enhancement
Make a comic strip that shows importance of friction.
