“The Talented Christian”

Christian is an education student with extraordinary love for
dancing. He’d been a member of YMS dance troupe since high school. His
teachers loved him for being smart in class and with exceptional talent
in dancing and choreography. In fact, he was never absent in his town’s
celebration of “Pintos Festival”. He dreamed that one day, he will become
one of the choreographers of Pintos festival where he will personally craft
the costume and produce the musical accompaniment. He thought of
crafting the costumes out of indigenous materials to showcase the
creativity and originality of Bogohanons. At present, he is earning
thousands of money as a choreographer and an artist. He used his
education to nurture his gift and determined to reach his goal in life. He
only proved that a shared talent will surely prosper and will bring good
life.

Questions:
1. What talents do Christian have?

2. Do you have a talent like Christian?

3. If you are to design the costume or props of your town’s

festival,
describe how it would look like?

What is It

FESTIVALS AND ITS IMPORTANCE TO FILIPINOS

Philippine festivals are famous for their colorful and artistic

costumes, masks, and props. The art elements like color, lines, and

textures are considered, and their principles like repetition and
balance are used to come up with good designs.

5
Before the coming of the Spaniards, Filipinos practiced animism, or
the worship of spirits, which involved performing ceremonies intended to
appease malevolent spirits. These spirits are believed to control parts of
human life, such as health, wealth, family, and subsistence. To ward off
misfortunes and gratify these spirits, ritual offerings are regularly made by
the locals. Catholic missionaries who arrived along with the
Spaniards created fiestas to gradually persuade the population to
convert to the Roman Catholic faith.

Today, the Philippines is the only predominantly Christian country in

all of Asia. The practices taught by the Spanish clergy have merged well
with indigenous ritual practices and carried over to this day. Philippine
festivals are celebrations to express gratitude for a good harvest in
honor of the town’s patron saint. Filipinos, especially those living in
provincial areas, go all out to celebrate these festivities to guarantee
comfort in the coming year, believing that the bigger they spend, the
more returns they will obtain.

For many Filipinos, fiestas are important because of the miraculous

power of the saints. It is believed that the saints are responsible for all the
good fortune and favor one receives. More than that, it is also during this
time that the locals get to celebrate their culture and traditions that are
passed on to the next generation. Fiestas reflect Filipino religion and faith,
which are the most essential part of society. Nowadays, however, a
distinguishing cultural aspect that is unique to the community is
preferred
as a central subject for many celebrations.

WHAT MAKES PHILIPPINE FESTIVALS

SINULOG FESTIVAL

The word ‘Sinulog’ is from the Cebuano adverb ‘sulog’. It means

“water current movement.” Its adaptation describes the forward-
backward step movement of the Sinulog dance. According to the rhythm
of the drums, people dance two steps forward, then one step backward.

As one dances the Sinulog, he/she sings or shouts the phrase, “Pit
Senyor kang (insert name) kini!” – offering and praying for others through
dance. “Pit Senyor” also acts as the festival greeting during the Sinulog.

6
Below is the common sketch of Sinulog Queen costume deep-
rooted on the history and origin of Sinulog.

Source: https://hmpft.com/2017/10/sinulog-festival-queen/

This costume design is inspired by the sun and sea.

The sun gives us light and life; it is also a symbol found in
the
Philippine flag. The sun also embodies warmth and limitless energy.
The skirt is wavy, to produce a water-like motion while the queen is
dancing. The sleeves also include similar material to simulate waves while
in motion. Some parts of the gown are semi-transparent, to show the
nature of light and water regarding its purity. It emphasizes the dancer’s
hands and feet movements.
The concept of the sea is further strengthened in this design due
to
the etymology of Sinulog that comes from the root word “sulog”
which
means the current or flow of water.
The design is structured concentrating on solid shapes to produce a
bold statement even when seen from a distance, where finer details
cannot be noticed.

ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL
Dubbed as the
“Mother of All Festivals”
in the Philippines, Kalibo’s
Ati-Atihan is the oldest
festival in the country. It
is a two-week merriment
that culminates on the 3rd
Sunday of January.
During the celebration,
people dressed in costumes
made of indigenous
materials gather in https://web.facebook.com/118918115134775/photos/a.121767

the
street and dance to the
beat
of the drums. Their skin is blackened to represent the early settlers
known as "ati". Chants of "'Viva! Santo Niño!" and "Hala Bira! Pwera
Pasma!” can be heard along with the rhythmic cadence of tribal music.
The first phrase is a tribute to the baby Jesus and the second is a plea not
to get sick under the sweltering heat of the sun.
In the last decades, different cities have come up with their
own version, but Ati-Atihan is unique for one major reason: it is
very interactive. The Ati-Atihan movement is easy to dance. It is only
single- forward, step-tap sequence & nothing more. And they have been
doing this mincing step for hundreds of years.
Dancers use a bilao as the main prop because that is what they
swing around. The bilao is painted and designed to be colorful but
especially the colors red, white and black. They use charcoal or paint on
their faces and body. The reason they paint themselves black is because
Ati-Atihan means "to look like an Ati". Ati's are native Filipinos that are
usually dark toned and short people. That is the main reason why they
color themselves black. Another prop is the clothes they wear. If you
noticed Ati-Atihan dancers have clothing that only covers their private
parts, even if it is a boy or girl. Another is a mask, but this is only optional.
It depends if people who will dance or preform want the mask. Lastly, they
use a wooden stick. The wooden stick is for the dance prod that they
present every last day of the festival.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
The Kadayawan is an annual festival in Davao City, Philippines.
Its name derives from the friendly Dabawenyo greeting “Madayaw”,
meaning good, valuable, superior, or beautiful. It is a celebration of
life, a thanksgiving for the nature’s gifts, the wealth of culture, the
bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
Mindanao, the southern region of the Philippines, is home to
indigenous peoples collectively called the Lumad.
What makes the Kadayawan a unique festival is that it pays tribute
to the lumad, which is a collective group of indigenous people living in the
city.

PANAGBENGA FESTIVAL
Panagbenga is a flower festival which means abundance of
beautifully colored flowers. It reflects the spirit and values of the people
and the tradition of the highlands in the Cordilleras. The fiesta serves as a
sign and proof that indeed, the most beautiful flowers of Dangwa comes
from this part of the country.
In tagalog Panagbenga means “Panahon ng Pagyabong” or
“Panahon
ng Pamumulaklak”. The dancers were dressed in flower-inspired
costumes. These costumes are sometimes partnered with concepts that
are flower- related, such as the living things you see in a garden full of
flowers and the like. There are also butterfly- inspired costumes, bees,
pots and water canisters bearing elements of music, dance and craft arts.

PAHIYAS FESTIVAL

Pahiyas is both a visual and culinary delight. A harvest festival that

pays homage to the farmers’ patron saint San Isidro
Labrador, the Pahiyas entices visitors with houses and establishments
adorned with fruits, vegetables, and the colorful leaf-shaped kiping.
Made from ground rice flour, the edible kiping is the star of the
Pahiyas decorations, easily transformed into all sorts of shapes and sizes
—from multi-colored flowers to a chandelier locally known as arangya.

DINAGYANG FESTIVAL

Formerly known as Iloilo Ati-Atihan, Dinagyang has its beginning in

1969. It was only in 1977 when the term “Dinagang” was used,
to
differentiate it from Kalibo’s Ati-Atihan.

https://www.traveloka.com/en-
ph/explore/destination/dinagyang -festival-guide/63741

1
According to Benito Jimena, former Iloilo City Tourism Officer,
Dinayang is not a copycat of other festivals devoted to Snr. Santo Nino
because it has evolved into something different.

He said that the use of dark brown body paint for the performers
also makes Dinagyang different from the other Santo Niño festivals all
over the country.

“Dinagyang uses body color, but we changed it to dark brown; we

did not remain black because we believe that the Ati is dark brown
and not black. The use of dark brown body paint has become the brand of
Dinagyang,” he said.
Dinagyang traditions of
making tribal costumes that add
to the festival fun have always
remained as it was for many
years, albeit with some changes
that reflect changing realities.
Well-designed tribal costumes
make all the difference all the
time. To maintain this
originality, it takes a great deal http://mybeautifuliloilo.blogspot.com/2011/01/dinagyan
g-festival-all-about-iloilo.html
of time and
effort to get a costume
ready.
Welding, gluing, sewing and dyeing techniques all complement each other
so as to result into a stylish product with a true identity, a true symbol of
real Ilongo traditions. Though headdresses, spear and shield are being
transformed annually, it has remained the center of interest to many
people.

1
What is It

After the Japanese occupation, the Philippine theater has evolved to

become an incorporation of the various influences such that of the
zarzuela, comedia or moro-moro and western classics. Theater was
largely performed in English during the time, as it became a large part of
classroom education.
By the 1950’s, theater had moved out of classrooms and the
concept
of paying for a ticket to see a theatrical performance emerged. This
legitimate theatre was held in closed theaters- these became event in
themselves, not just mere parts of a celebration or religious ritual.
During this time, playwrights such as Severino Montano, Wilfrido Ma.
Guerrero, and Alberto S. Florentino honed their crafts and contributed
to the development of performing arts in the Philippines.

What are some of the Philippine theatrical forms that are still
relevant at the present time?

Senakulo - theatrical dramatization of Christ passion and death

which is a reenactment of events leading to the His
crucifixion; done in Lenten season

Santacruzan - done in May, this is a dramatization of St. Helena’s

search for the cross and is a novena procession with
persons chosen to wear attires of the different
characters of the Bible.

Moriones - comes from the word “morion” the helmet of

Spanish soldiers. This is the dramatization of one
Spanish soldier named Longinus, who pierced the heart
of Christ on the cross to make sure He was dead, but a
drop of blood fell into his blind eye. Miraculously, he was
able to see and declared Christ’s divinity. For this he
was beheaded. This is celebrated in Marinduque.

Moro moro - or komedya, introduced by the Spanish, with

brightly costumed princes and a princess of medieval
Europe. Usually, they depict epic stories of love and
vengeance, with long and dramatic fighting scenes,

1
lasting three to fifteen hours meant to entertain the
local people.

1
Zarzuela - originated in Spain in the 17th century but reached its
definitive form in the 19th century as a mixture of
instrumental music, singing, dancing and the spoken
word that encompassed the rhythms and traditions of
the diverse cultures of Spain. Today the form and
tradition of zarzuela is firmly established, based on
styles developed in the years before the Spanish Civil
War in the 1930's.

What are the art elements and principles mostly shown and applied in
Philippine theatrical forms or Philippine drama?

Colors - usually, these dramas had characters in bright and

elaborate costumes of bright colors to attract the
viewers. Since the characters were known by their
attire, they followed tradition.

Sounds - since microphones were unheard of in the Spanish

times, the characters in the drama relied on music
played by local musicians, or they sung their
parts with
accompaniment of musical instruments
