Guide Questions

1. How many factors are there in the sum and difference

of two cubes?
What type of polynomial is the first factor? How about
the second factor?

2. What process will you apply in determining the first

factor of the sum and difference of two cubes?
How about the second factor?

3. What sign is used in the first factor of the sum of two

cubes?
How about the difference of two cubes?

4. What is the relationship of the sign of the middle term

in the second factor of the sum of two cubes?
How about the sign of the middle term in the second
factor of the difference of two cubes?

REMEMBER

The factored form of the sum of two cubes is the

product of a binomial and a trinomial. That is,

x 3 + y 3=( x + y ) ( x2 −xy+ y 2 ).

The factored form of the difference of two cubes is the

product of a binomial and a trinomial. That is,

x 3− y 3= ( x − y ) ( x 2 + xy + y 2 ).

Below are the steps in factoring the sum and difference of

two cubes.

Example 1. Factor completely a 3+ 8.

Step 1. Find the cube roots of the first term and the last
term of the sum of two cubes to determine the
binomial factor. The binomial factor takes the sign
of the given expression.

The cube root of a 3 is a while the cube root of 8 is 2.

Then, the binomial factor is a+ 2.

Step 2. Determine the trinomial factor by using the

binomial factor of the sum of two cubes.

(a) First term of the trinomial factor:

Square the first term of the binomial factor.

2
(a) is a 2 .

(b) Middle term of the trinomial factor:

Find the product of the two terms of the binomial

factor.
(a)(2) is 2a.

The middle of the trinomial factor takes the

opposite sign of the binomial factor.

Hence, the middle term of the trinomial factor is -

2a.

(c) Last term of the trinomial factor:

Square the last term of the binomial factor.

2
(2) is 4.
Thus, the trinomial factor of a 3+ 8 is a 2−2 a+4 .

Step 3. Express the sum of two cubes in factored form.

Sum of Two Cubes Factored Form
3
a +8 ( a+ 2 ) ( a2−2 a+ 4 )

Example 2. Factor completely 64 s 6−125 t 9 .

Step 1. Find the cube roots of the first term and the last
term of the difference of two cubes to determine
the binomial factor. The binomial factor takes the
sign of the given expression.

The cube root of 64 s 6 is 4 s 2 while the cube root of

Step 2. Determine the trinomial factor by using the
binomial factor of the difference of two cubes.

(a) First term of the trinomial factor:

Square the first term of the binomial factor.

2 2
(4 s ) is 16 s4 .

(b) Middle term of the trinomial factor:

Find the product of the two terms of the binomial

factor.
2 3
( 4 s )(5 t ) is 20 s 2 t 3.

The middle of the trinomial factor takes the

opposite sign of the binomial factor.

Hence, the middle term of the trinomial factor is

2 3
20 s t .

(c) Last term of the trinomial factor:

Square the last term of the binomial factor.

3 2
(5 t ) is 25 t 6.
Thus, the trinomial factor of 64 s 6−125 t 9 is 16 s4 + 20 s 2 t 3+ 25t 6
.

Step 3. Express the sum of two cubes in factored form.

Difference of
Factored Form
Two Cubes
6
64 s −125 t
9
( 64 s 6−125 t 9 )( 16 s 4 +20 s 2 t3 +25 t 6 )
