S.I and British systems:
i) Kinematic j) Q V k) P / l) v2/2g
Viscosity
2. Complete the following table (make a sample of your calculations showing conversions)
4. If a barrel of oil weights 1.50 KN, Calculate the specific weight, density, and specific gravity of
the oil. The barrel contains 179 liters, and its own weight is 119 N.
6. Calculate the capillary effect in millimeters in a glass tube of 4 mm diam., when immersed in (i)

8. What is the diameter of a spherical water drop if the inside pressure is greater than that of the
atmosphere by 15 N/m2 and the surface tension of water 0.074 N/m.
9. For a droplet of 0.55 mm radius, what will be the inside pressure in it above that of the

10. A liquid compressed in a cylinder has a volume of 1.0 liter at a pressure of 100 N/cm 2 and a
volume of 995 cm3 at a pressure of 200 N/cm2. What is its bulk modulus of elasticity? The
temperature is kept constant at 0o C.
11. At a depth of 6.8 km in the ocean, the pressure is 700 kg/cm2 above the atmospheric pressure.
Assuming specific weight of water at the surface equal to 1020 kg/m 3 and the average bulk
modulus of elasticity equals 2.5x104 kg/cm2. CALCULATE:
• The specific weight at that depth.
• The change in specific volume from the surface to 6.8 km depth.
12. Determine the force required to pull a 1.0 mm thick plate between two stationary parallel plates

one of stationary plates. The moving plate has a velocity of 1.2 m/s and the viscosity of the
lubricant is 0.07 poise.
13. The space between a square smooth flat plate (50×50) cm2 and a smooth inclined plane (1:100) is
filled with a film of lubricating oil (S.G.=0.90) of 0.01 cm thickness. Determine the kinematic

14. The velocity distribution in a fluid over a plate is given by the expression v = 3 y 2 + 2y, where v
is the velocity in m/sec at a distance y meters from the plate. Calculate the shear stress at the plate
surface. Given that the viscosity of the fluid is 9.8 poise
15. A piston 11.94 cm diameter and 16 cm long works in a cylinder 12 cm diameter. Lubricating oil
which fills the space between them of viscosity 0.65 poise. Calculate the speed at which the
piston will move through the cylinder when an axial load of 5 bounds is applied. Neglect the
inertia of the piston.
16. A cylinder of 0.12 m radius rotates concentrically inside of a fixed cylinder of 0.122 m

space between the cylinders if a torque of 1 N.m is required to maintain an angular velocity of 2

17. The thrust of a shaft is taken by a collar bearing provided with a forced lubrication system, which
maintain a film of oil of uniform thickness between the surface of the collar and the bearing. The
external and internal diameters of collar are 16 and 12 cms respectively. The thickness of oil film

friction when the shaft is rotated at a speed of 350 r.p.m.
18. A body with gravity force of 450 N with a flat surface area of 0.25 m 2 slides down a lubricated
inclined plane making a 30o angle with the horizontal for viscosity of 1*10-4 m2/sec and body
