EEE4119 – ASSIGNMENT 1

NAME…………………………….... Score………….
SOLVE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS:

1. A single phase transmission line 90 km is made up of hard drawn copper 500 mils
in diameter. If the resistivity of the hard drawn copper at 20°C is 1.77x10¯ ⁸ ohm-
meter. Determine the loop resistance at 20°C .

2. A 345 kV transmission line has two bundled conductor per phase, spaced 18
inches horizontally. The conductor used in the bundle has a self GMD of 0.0403 ft.
If the phases are spaced 15.5 ft apart, what is the self GMR of the bundled
conductor.

3. A transmission line has a reactance of 0.486 ohm per km. GMR is 2 cm and
conductor spacing is horizontal such that D ab = D, Dbc = D and Dca = 2D. Find the
spacing D.

4. A 230 kV, 60Hz, 3-phase completely transposed overhead line has one ACSR 954-
kcmil (or 564 mm2) conductor per phase and flat horizontal phase spacing, with
8m between adjacent conductors. Determine the inductance in H/m and the
inductive reactance in ohm/km.

5. A transmission line cable consists of 26 strands of identical copper

conductor, each 1.255 mm in diameter. The length of the cable is 10 km
but because of the twist of the strands, the actual length of each conductor
is increased by 5%. If the resistivity of the copper is 1.2x10 8 Ω-m, what is
the resistance of the cable in Ω?
