A Distinguished Teacher Based on Philippine Professional Standards for

Teachers: A Reflection

The continuing professional development and advancement of teachers are based on

the principle of lifelong learning. It is of utmost importance in enhancing teacher quality for
long-term and sustainable nation building, where teachers play a crucial role, hence, the
national adoption and implementation of the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers
(PPST). Through quality teachers, the Philippines can develop holistic learners who are
steeped in values, equipped with 21st century skills, and able to propel the country to
development and progress (Department of Education - Teacher Education Council, 2017).

As a pre-service teacher, I am honed to be the next quality teacher in line.

Therefore, it is a necessity to be able to familiarize myself with these standards. This will
help me reflect on and assess my skill and abilities now as a pre-service teacher so I can
identify my strengths that will be my asset as well as my weakness that I will need to
improve to qualify myself as a quality teacher in the near future.

The works of teachers are defined at different career stages which range from
beginning teachers to distinguished ones. As a teacher, I should aim for the highest
standard among the continuum—to be distinguished. It takes a long way to be a
distinguished teacher; every moment matters and contributes to becoming one. As a pre-
service teacher, how will I start to be one of the distinguished based on PPST? There are
various—big and small—ways to do so. Upon reflecting, I were able to identify which steps I
took made a contribution to my journey toward it.

I think the most essential step I took was focusing on building content knowledge.
Throughout my journey as a pre-service teacher, I always made sure I have thorough
understanding of the subjects I will teach and learned how I can integrate one subject
across the other. I personally found this the most difficult given that, deep inside me, I
know knowledge continuously update and that there will always be questions from students
that I wouldn’t be able to answer. But this can be countered through always seeking to
expand content knowledge. Stay curious and reflective—explore different resources and new
educational developments and engage in conversations with peers and professors about
educational topics. Additionally, strong communication skills is needed to be an effective
communicator of knowledge, hence practicing it and seeking feedback for improvement are
essential.

One of the role of teachers is to provide learning environments that are safe, secure,
fair, and supportive. A way that I have been practicing for a long time that I think makes me
a good pre-service teacher is modeling respect and fairness in my every interaction with
people, may they be students, teachers, parents, or staff. Additionally, it should be
encouraged to study and apply non-violent, positive discipline approaches that promote
behavior management without punishment. As a student who has experienced this kind of
discipline during my elementary days, I am totally against it. It has a negative effect on
students. I also enjoy class observation even during my previous years as this helps me
learn how experienced teachers handle misbehavior and use positive discipline techniques,
apply policies in real classroom situations, handle transitions, maintain student engagement,
and deal with disruptions. The teachers that I have observed throughout my journey as a
pre-service teacher were examples of the distinguished ones that I aspire to be; although I
wasn’t physically involved in the process, I learned something valuable.

A distinguished teacher also ensures that his/her teaching practices are focused on
inclusivity, diversity, and differentiation. Aside from the aforementioned, I also observe how
experienced teachers use differentiated strategies to meet individual student needs so I
could reflect on how I can adapt these practices. Additionally, I still need more practice in
designing lessons that accommodate diverse learners. On the many times that I have done
demo teaching, I am still yet to learn on and experiment with tailoring lessons to meet their
diverse needs.

As a distinguished teacher, one should also have the ability to translate the
curriculum into learning activities that are relevant to the students. As a pre-service teacher,
I continuously study how to plan lessons that are sequenced and progress the learning from
simple to complex as well as practice setting SMART learning outcomes. I have practiced
implementing it through lesson planning since I was on my first year. Additionally, I have
experienced developing my own teaching and learning resources that can be used in the
classroom with the use of either traditional materials or digital tools and ICT or a mixture of
the two to create engaging and interactive lessons.
Teachers also provide learners with the necessary feedback about learning
outcomes. As a pre-service teacher, I have learned about the different type of assessment
and how each type is designed, selected, and used effectively. I have also designed various
assessments that measured my knowledge and ability with aligning them to learning
objectives and curriculum standards.

As a pre-service teacher, I am expected to understand school policies, may it be that

of my university’s or college’s or that of my designated school. In that way, I can
understand how it contributes to creating a conducive learning environment to students or
which is in need of improvement. I am also expected to understand the Code of Ethics for
Professional Teachers and familiarize myself with laws and regulations that govern the
teaching profession. I should also learn to communicate and collaborate with parents, hence
as previously mentioned, it is necessary to improve communication skills.

As a teacher, regardless of being a beginner or distinguished, we should uphold the

dignity of the teaching profession; engage in reflective practice; set clear, achievable goals
for professional growth; develop leadership skills; and engage in continuous learning.

Distinguished teachers embody the highest standard for teaching grounded in global
best practices. They exhibit exceptional capacity to improve their own teaching practice and
that of others. They are recognized as leaders in education, contributors to the profession
and initiators of collaborations and partnerships. They create lifelong impact in the lives of
colleagues, students and others. They consistently seek professional advancement and
relevance in pursuit of teaching quality and excellence. They exhibit commitment to inspire
the education community and stakeholders for the improvement of education provision in
the Philippines (Department of Education – Teacher Education Council, 2017). Although it
was still a long way to go, my journey—so far—has created small steps toward it. And with
the remaining months I have in college, I wish to make the best out of it; I would create
and grab opportunities that can contribute to my goal of being a distinguished teacher.
