The legend tells that, long ago, there lived a beautiful woman named Dayang Sumbi, the
daughter of the king of Sumbing Perbangkara. Her beautiful face made Dayang Sumbi contested
by the princes.
As a princess from the kingdom, Dayang Sumbi has a weaving hobby. One time, when she was
busy weaving cloth, suddenly her loom fell. Instead of taking it herself, Dayang Sumbi said an
oath: if the one who took the loom were a man, then she would take him as her husband, but if
the one who took the loom were a woman, she would make her a sister.
Unexpectedly, sometime later, there came a male dog named Si Tumang, which brought Dayang
Sumbi’s loom. Finally, to fulfill her oath, Dayang Sumbi married Tumang (long story short,
Tumang was a god who was expelled from heaven). From that marriage, a son named
Sangkuriang was born.
Time went on until Sangkuriang grew into a handsome boy. One day, Sangkuriang found out
that his mother wanted to eat a deer’s liver. Sangkuriang also hunted into the forest with
Tumang. While hunting, Sangkuriang felt upset because he hadn’t successfully hunted any
animals. Then, he decided to kill Tumang and gave Tumang’s heart to his mother.
Moments later, Dayang Sumbi found out that Sangkuriang had killed Tumang. Furiously,
Dayang Sumbi hit Sangkuriang’s head and threw him out of the house.
Years later, Sangkuriang, who was kicked out of the house, had grown into a handsome man.
While Dayang Sumbi remained young, this was because at that time Dayang Sumbi ate
Tumang’s liver. One day, Sangkuriang met Dayang Sumbi again, and they fell in love with each
other.
Dayang Sumbi, who finally found out that the young man was her biological son who had been
expelled for years, insisted on refusing and decided on Sangkuriang to do an impossible
assignment.
Dayang Sumbi said that if Sangkuriang wanted to marry her, he had to build a big boat in just
one night. Sangkuriang also agreed. With the help of the spirits, Sangkuriang almost succeeded
in the task before dawn.
However, Dayang Sumbi did not remain silent. She and the women around her pounded the
mortar and made it look like the dawn had come. The spirits fled, so Sangkuriang failed to finish
his boat. This made Sangkuriang furious and kicked the boat upside down. The overturned boat
is now known as Mount Tangkuban Perahu.
Several days later, she got her wish. The eggs cracked and some cute little ducklings appeared.
"Peep, peep" the little ducklings cried. "Quack, quack" their mother greeted in return.
However, the largest egg had not cracked. The mother duck sat on it for several days. Finally, it
cracked and a huge ugly duckling waddled out. The mother duck looked at him in surprise. He
was so big and very gray. He didn't look like the others at all. He was like a turkey.
When the mother duck brought the children to the pond for their first swimming lesson., the huge
grey duckling splashed and paddled about just as nicely as the other ducklings did. "That is not a
turkey chick. He is my very own son and quite handsome" the mother said proudly.
However, the other animals didn't agree. They hissed and made fun of him day by day. Even his
own sisters and brothers were very unkind. "You are very ugly" they quacked.
The little poor duckling was very unhappy. "I wish I looked like them," he thought to himself.
One day, the ugly duckling ran away and hid in the bushes. The sad duckling lived alone through
the cold and snowy winter. Finally, the spring flowers began to bloom. While he was swimming
in the pond, he saw three large white swans swimming toward him. "Oh, dear. these beautiful
birds will laugh and peck me too" he said to himself. But the swans did not attack him. Instead,
they swam around him and stroked him with their bills. As the ugly duckling bent his neck to
speak to them, he saw his reflection in the water. He could not believe his eyes. "I am not an ugly
duckling but a beautiful swam" he exclaimed.
He was very happy. From that day on, he swam and played with his new friends and was happier
than he had never been.
Pinocchio
In the past, there was a puppeteer whose name was Geppetto. He is eager to have a son very
much but his wife passed away several years ago. One day, he got the idea to make a puppet in
order not to be lonely again. He made a puppet all day long. Finally, in the morning he had
finished his work and he named the puppet Pinocchio. Soon he felt lonely again since Pinocchio
couldn’t walk or talk by himself. One night, Geppetto prayed to God to become a real boy. He
always thought it on his mind in his dream.
The next morning, he was surprised that Pinocchio was alive. He taught Pinocchio how to walk,
how to read, how to speak, and to do other things as a human. He then studied at an elementary
school. One day, Pinocchio felt bored and it made him go home late. When Pinocchio finally
came home, Geppetto asked him. He said that he was at school but he wasn’t. Instantly,
Pinocchio's nose grew longer and longer and it meant that Pinocchio had lied.
The next morning, Pinocchio was kidnapped by the owner of the circus. Pinocchio soon became
a slave for the circus. He was so famous because he was a puppet who could talk. Geppetto
worried about him because Pinocchio had not been going home for almost two days. He tried to
find Pinocchio everywhere but he found nothing. When he searched for him on the sea, a big
wave smashed him. He was then in a whale’s stomach when he awoke. He couldn't find a way to
go out.
On the other side, Pinocchio finally could escape from the circus. He came home but nobody was
there. Later on, he searched for Geppetto in the sea. He had the same accident as Geppetto and
he met Geppetto in a whale’s stomach. Both of them got out of their stomachs by making a fire.
In the end of the story, they went home together and lived happily ever after.
Ali baba
Once upon a time there were 40 cruel thieves who put their stolen money and treasures in
a cave. They went in the cave by saying ”Open Sesame” to the cave entrance. A poor person,
named Ali Baba saw them while they were doing that, so he heard the opening word. After they
left, he went toward the cave and opened it. Suddenly he found a very large quantity of money
and golden treasures. He took some of it and went back home. After that he became a rich man
and his brother wanted to know how he became rich.
Ali Baba turned into the richest man in his village. His evil brother was really jealous of
him, and wanted to know how he could get such a lot of money. Therefore, when Ali Baba went
to the cave again to take some more money, his brother followed him. He saw everything, and
decided to go back the next day to take some money for himself. The next morning he found a
lot of money in the cave, and he wanted to take all of them. Unfortunately, when he was busy
carrying the money to his house, the thieves came. The boss of the thieves asked him how he
knew about the cave. He told everything, but unluckily they killed him and went to Ali Baba’s
house.
After finding Ali Baba’s house, they made a plan to kill him the following night. Some of
the thieves hid in big jars, and the boss pretended that he was a merchant who wanted to sell the
jars to Ali Baba. Ali Baba who was a kind man invited the boss of the thief to have lunch
together. After lunch they took a rest. Luckily, the house maid went out of the house, and found
that there were thieves inside the jars. She finally boiled hot oil and poured it intothe jars to kill
all of them. The boss of the thieves was caught, and put into prison.
Ali Baba was saved from the danger, and he finally lived happily ever after with his maid
who became his wife shortly after.
Mouse Deer and Crocodile
One day, Mouse Deer went down to the river to take a drink. But he knew that the
crocodile might be waiting underwater to eat him, so he said out loud. “I wonder if the water’s
warm. I’ll put in my leg and find out.” Of course Mouse Deer didn’t put in his leg. He picked up
a stick instead and put one end into the water. Chomp…! Crocodile grabbed the stick and pulled
it underwater. Mouse Deer laughed. “Ha… ha…ha… Stupid crocodile! Cant you tell the
difference between a stick and a leg?” Then Mouse Deer ran off to drink somewhere else.
In the next day, Mouse Deer wanted to cross the river. He wanted to eat the fruits on the
other side of the river. He saw a floating log in the river. He knew that Crocodile looked like a
log when he floated. Mouse Deer didn’t want to be eaten by Crocodile when he crosses the river.
He had an idea. He called out loud, “Crocodile!” Crocodile rose from the water, “Hello, Mouse
Deer. Have you come to be my lunch?” Mouse Deer smiled. “Sorry, not today, Crocodile. I have
orders from the King. He wants to invite all the crocodiles in this river to a party. He wants me to
count all the crocodiles so he could prepare enough meal for you.”
“Really…? Tell us what to do,” said Crocodile. “You must line up from this side of the
river to the other side,” said Mouse Deer. Crocodile then got all his friends and family. They
lined up across the river. Mouse Deer then jumped onto Crocodile’s back. “One,” he counted. He
jumped onto the next crocodile, “Two.” And the next crocodile, “Three.” Mouse Deer kept
jumping until he arrived on the other side of the river. “How many are there?” asked Crocodile.
“Just enough,” said Mouse Deer. He laughed as he ran to the fore
