Important Formulas in Chemical Kinetics

1. Rate of Reaction:

For a reaction: A -> B

Rate: Rate = -d[A]/dt = d[B]/dt

2. Rate Law:

For a general reaction: aA + bB -> cC + dD

Rate law: Rate = k[A]^m[B]^n

k is the rate constant

m and n are the reaction orders with respect to A and B

3. Order of Reaction:

Sum of the powers of concentration terms in the rate law.

For example, if Rate = k[A]^2[B], the reaction order is 2+1=3.

4. Zero-Order Reactions:

Rate: Rate = k

Integrated form: [R] = [R]_0 - kt

5. First-Order Reactions:

Rate: Rate = k[A]

Integrated form: [A] = [A]_0 e^{-kt}

Half-life: t_{1/2} = 0.693/k

6. Second-Order Reactions:

Rate: Rate = k[A]^2 or Rate = k[A][B]

Integrated form for Rate = k[A]^2: 1/[A] = 1/[A]_0 + kt

Half-life for Rate = k[A]^2: t_{1/2} = 1/(k[A]_0)

7. Arrhenius Equation:

k = A e^{-Ea/(RT)}

k: rate constant
A: pre-exponential factor

Ea: activation energy

R: universal gas constant

T: temperature in Kelvin

8. Effect of Temperature on Rate Constant:

Using Arrhenius equation: ln k = ln A - Ea/(RT)

9. Reaction Mechanisms and Molecularity:

Molecularity: Number of molecules participating in an elementary step.

For example, a reaction with molecularity 2 (bimolecular): A + B -> Products

10. Collision Theory:

Rate constant: k = P Z_AB e^{-Ea/(RT)}

P: steric factor

Z_AB: collision frequency
