Pulse and Switching Circuits

1. A low pass RC filter circuit consisting of a resistor of 4.7K and in series with a capacitor of
47nF is connected across a 10V sinusoidal supply. Calculate the output voltage, gain, cut
-off frequency and time constant at a frequency of 100Hz.

Solution: We know that-

Xc =1/2πfC = 1/ (2πx 100 x 47x10-9 )
= 33863 Ω
Vout = Vin x [Xc /(R2 + Xc2)1/2 ]
= 10 x [ 33863 / (47002+ 338632 )1/2 ]
=9.9V
Gain (Av) = Vout/Vin = 9.9V/10V = 0.99
Cut-off frequency, fc = 1/2πRC
= 1/ [2π x4700 x47x10-9] = 720 Hz.
Time constant, τ = RC = 4700x 47x10 - 9 = 220.9 µSec

2. A low pass RC filter circuit consisting of a resistor of 10K and in series with a capacitor of
2µF is connected across a 20V sinusoidal supply. Calculate the output voltage, gain, cut-
off frequency and time constant at a frequency of 10 KHz.
Solution: The same formula should be used to solve this problem like problem 1.

3. A pulse transformer has the following parameters:

L = 5 mH, σ = 40µH, C= 50Pf, R1= 200 Ω, R2= 2KΩ, n=1, Calculate-
(i) Amplification factor (a),
(ii) Time period (T) and
(iii) Damping constant (k)

Solution: We know that-

(i) Amplification factor

a = R2 / (R1+R2)

= 2x103/ (200+ 2x103)

= 0.909

(ii) Time period

T = 2π (a C σ) 1/2

= 2π (40 x10-6 x 50 x10-12 x 0.909) ½

= 0.267 µSec.

(iv) Damping constant

K = [R1/σ + 1/ R2 C]. T/4π
= [200/(40x10-6) + 1/ (2 x 103x 50 x10-12)). [0.267x10-6/4π]
= 0.318
