Reliability Block Diagram of Mechanic Pen

This document reviews the reliability block diagram of a mechanical pen. It divides the pen into nine components and four main functions: body creation, mechanical mechanism, ink flow mechanism, and accessories. A reliability block diagram is created with the main components arranged in series, indicating they must all function for the pen to work. The diagram models the pen's reliability based on the components' reliabilities.

ASSIGNMENT 3 Reliability Engineering (Master Course)

RELIABILITY BLOCK DIAGRAM OF A MECHANICAL PEN: A REVIEW

Success and Failure Definition Practicability which offered by a mechanical pen has made this kind of pen become quite popular. Therefore, the knowledge about various aspects of a mechanical pen will be very interesting to be learned. This review discusses the reliability aspect of a mechanical pen, especially on reliability block diagram. Establish a reliability block diagram of a device is not easy as imagined. This problem could be solved by defining success and failure of a mechanical pen using functional approach. The first thing to do is describing the functions that should be owned by mechanical pen components. We have divided the mechanical pen component functions into four, namely: a.) body creation function, b.) mechanical mechanism function, c.) ink flow mechanism function, and d.) accessories function. These functions can be classified into two categories, main function and additional function. Body creation, mechanical mechanism, and ink flow mechanism function belong to the main function. The accessories function is an additional function. Hence, this function is allowed to exist or not. After explaining the functions of a mechanical pen, finally the success and failure definition can be given. A mechanical pen system is said to be successful if the entire main function are going well. This indicates that one or two of the main functions are not permitted to fail. 2. Mechanical Pen Components The mechanical pen has divided into nine components as depicted in figure 1.

Figure 1. Mechanical pen components The mechanical pen components in figure 1 can be classified based on the functions which have been defined previously. The classification result based on functionality of mechanical pen is provided by table 1. Table 1. Reliability Block Diagram Design The reliability block diagram of a mechanical pen system can be made by considering the primacy of the components.

Table 1 informs the position of each component in the mechanical pen system. The main components should be arranged in series system and this indicates that those components will serve as key elements in the mechanical pen system. The reliability block diagram for each function is shown in table 2. Table 2. Based on the information in table 2, the reliability block diagram of the whole system in a mechanical pen can be described as follows. B A C E F G H I D Figure 2. Reliability block diagram of a mechanical pen system A, C, E, F, G, H, and I are the key elements in the system 4. Reliability Calculation The reliability formulation of reliability block diagram in the figure 2 can be obtain simulated the system when success or

fail. If we suppose the components reliability in mechanical pen system as:

A = B = C = D = E =

F = G = H = I =

the reliability calculation of the mechanical pen system will be: reliability of keys element

B key elements D reliability of success system B success D

 reliability of fail system B fail D
