Part-II
1. Write all the formulas for all the possible cases of testing of Hypothesis.

Case Formulas Needed

Case 1(a): Sample test for population mean when 𝝈 is known

2. The mean life time of a sample of 100 tube lights produced by a company is computed
to be 1570 hours with a standard deviation of 120 hours. The company claims that the
average life of the tubes produced by the company is 1600 hours. Using the level of
significance of 0.05, is the claim acceptable?

3. A random sample with observations 65, 71, 64, 71, 70, 69, 64, 63, 67, 68 is drawn from a
normal population with standard deviation √7.056. Test the hypothesis that the
population mean is 69 at 1% level of significance. [Given that 𝑃(0 < 𝑧 < 2.58) =
0.495]

4. A random sample of 25 workers is drawn from a factory to test if their average monthly
wage is Rs. 10,000 or not. The population wage distribution is assumed to be normal
with a s.d. of Rs. 1000. The average monthly wage based on the 25 observations comes
out to be Rs. 9500. Perform a test at 5% level to see if the data support the claim. [Given
𝑃(𝑧 > 1.96) = 0.025, where z is a standard normal variate.]

5. The mean breaking strength of the cables supplied by a manufacturer is 1800 with a
standard deviation 100. By a new technique in the manufacturing process it is claimed
that the breaking strength of the cables have increased. In order to test the claim a
sample of 50 cables is tested. It is found that the mean breaking strength is 1850. Can we
support the claim at 0.01 level of significance? [Given the area under standard normal
curve is 0.01 enclosed between the ordinates z=2.33 and z=∞].

Case 1(b): Sample test for population mean when 𝝈 is unknown

6. A drug is given to 10 patients and the increments in blood pressure were recorded as
3, 6, −2, 4, −3, 4, 6, 0, 0, 2. Is it reasonable to believe that the drug has no effect on
change of blood pressure? Test at 5% level of significance and assuming that the
increment in the blood pressure after administering the drug is normally distributed. It
may be assumed that for 9 degrees of freedom 𝑃(𝑡 > 2.262) = 0.025.

7. A random sample of 9 experimental animals under a certain weight give the following
increase in weight

∑ 𝑥𝑖 = 45, ∑ 𝑥𝑖 2 = 279
where 𝑥𝑖 (lbs) denotes the increase in weight of the ith animal. Assuming that the
increase in weight is normally distributed as 𝑁(𝜇, 𝜎) variate, test 𝐻0 : 𝜇 = 1 against
𝐻1 : 𝜇 ≠ 1 at 5% level of significance. [Given 𝑃(𝑡 > 2.306) = 0.025 for 8 degrees of
freedom]

Case 2: Two sample test of equality of two means

8. A man buys 50 electric bulbs of “Philips” and 50 electric bulbs of “HMT”. He found
that “Philips” bulbs gave an average life of 1500 hours with a standard deviation of
60hours and “HMT” bulbs gave an average life of 1512 hours with a standard deviation
of 80 hours. Is there a significant difference in the mean life of the two brands of the
bulb at 1% level of significance?

9. A dietitian has developed a new low-fat weight reducing diet. Two random samples of
size 20 each of obese people are taken for an experiment. One group is provided by the
new low-fat diet and the other group by an existing weight reducing fat diet. For each
individual of both groups, the amount of loss (or gain) in weight in a month is recorded.
From the following data on weight-loss, test at 5% significance level if the new low-fat
diet is more effective in reducing weights compared to the existing one.

New low-fat diet Existing weight reducing diet

𝑛1 = 20 𝑛2 = 20
𝑥̅1 = 3.8kg 𝑥̅2 = 2.4kg

Assume that the weight losses for the two diets are independently distributed random
variables with respective standard deviations 2.3 kg for new diet and 2.6 kg for the
existing diet. [Given 𝑃(𝑧 > 1.645) = 0.05, where z is a standard normal variate.]

10. In a certain factory there are two different processes of manufacturing the same item.
The average weight in a sample of 250items produced from one process is found to be
120gm with a standard deviation of 12gm; the corresponding figures in a sample of 400
items from the other process are 124 and 4. Compute the standard error (S.E.) of
difference between the two sample means. Is this difference significant? Also find 99%
confidence limits for the difference in the average weights of items produced by the two
processes.

Case 3: Large sample test for population proportion

11. A dice was thrown 400 times and ‘six’ resulted 80 times. Do the data justify the
hypothesis of an unbiased dice?

12. A coin is tossed 900 times and head appeared 490 times. Does this result support the
hypothesis that the coin is unbiased?

Dr. Avipsita Chatterjee Department of IT, CSE(IOTCSBT), CSE(IOT) I.E.M.

13. A dice was thrown 9000 times and of these 3220 yielded a 3 or 4. Is this consistent with
2.58
the hypothesis that the dice was unbiased? [Given ∫−2.58 𝜑(𝑧)𝑑𝑧 = 0.95]

Case 4: Two sample test for population proportion(large sample)

14. In a random sample of 1000 persons taken from a state A, 510 are found to be smokers.
In another sample of 800 persons taken from a state B, 480 are found to be smokers.
Test at 1% level whether the population of the two states has a significant difference as
far as smoking habit is concerned?

15. In a certain city 100 men in a sample of 400 were found to be anime watcher. In another
city, the numbers of watcher were 300 in a sample of 800. Does this indicate that there is
a greater proportion of anime watcher in the second city than the first? [Given 𝑃(𝑧 >
1.645) = 0.05]
