MASTERS: OF PUBLIC HEALTH
ASSIGNMENT
UNIT CODE: MPH 5128/MBY 5101 UNIT NAME: BIOSTATISTICS

1. Normal or Gaussian distribution is the most important continuous probability

distribution. Explain 5 characteristics of a Normal Distribution Curve (10mks)
2. The probability of a woman developing breast cancer over a lifetime is
about 1/9.
(a) What is the probability that exactly 2 women of 10 will develop breast
cancer over a lifetime? (2 marks)
(b) What is the probability that at least 2 women of 10 will develop breast
cancer over a lifetime? (3 marks)
3. Experiments were run in several different scientific laboratories to determine the

Vapour pressure of cadmium as a function of temperature. The data below shows

the results from one of the laboratories: (15 marks)

Temp (K) 525 501 475 452 413 551 503 488 569 432

Pressure 10.1000 2.8300 0.6370 0.1590 0.0086 31.2000 2.9800 1.3900 89.7000 0.0489

(Millionths of
an Atmos)

a. Plot the above data on a scatter diagram and then use correlation analysis to
measure the association between the two variables.
b. Develop one linear regression model and two polynomial regression models and
calculate the value of R2 for each model.
c. Which of the three models has produced the closest fit?
d. Use the linear regression model developed, predict the vapour pressure of
cadmium if its temperature is 540 Kelvins.
e. Describe the appropriate assumptions while undertaking regression analysis

4. The times taken by patients to undergo a minor surgery in MKU clinic are
recorded in the table below. (10 marks)

Time in seconds 10-14 15-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39

Frequency 4 12 20 22 5 3

Compute: Standard deviation, Median, Interquartile range

5. Describe any 5 ways of presenting analyzed data in Health research (5mks)
